| Windows 7 RC1 made available for download Windows 7 RC1 can be downloaded now by MSDN, TechBeta and TechNet subscribers, and the general public will be able to download it on May 5. Plus, this software can stay on a user's PC for more than a year. Windows 7 RC1 made available for download | Tech News on ZDNet

| Re: Windows 7 RC1 made available for download Hmm... I'm not sure of the value of a RC version of Windows for the general public... Sure I expect software developers would find it useful... for instance in order to start some testing of their apps on the new platform... And techos would probably want to have a look and run some benchmarks and evaluate it. And no doubt MS would like feedback about the bugs from a broad spectrum of beta testers... But otherwise why would a user or business run it? Even tho its a RC its not the final version and there may be multiple bugs. Certainly support for drivers and application upgrades from the vendors will be patchy at best. Windows7 will have to be at least as stable and as reliable and as supported as Vista before I would upgrade my systems to it ... and I dont see a RC meeting that requirement. Heck, MS even names it RC1... as if there might be a 2 or 3 at some point...

| Re: Windows 7 RC1 made available for download I downloaded a copy of 32 and 64bit. I installed the 64 bit on a Dell Inspiron 530S w/4 gig of ram and a 2.2 dual Intel CPU. I did the upgrade approach and it was a very smooth upgrade. No problems and I never as much as lost a file as far as I know... ![]()

| Re: Windows 7 RC1 made available for download I downloaded the 64 bit version but have not installed it yet. I may never install it because the classic start menu looks to be gone for good. I also dislike the new taskbar but to a lesser degree. I played with the public beta for a few days but the lack of the classic start menu forced me back to Vista. I was hoping it was removed just for the beta testing to force users to try out the updated start menu. Looks like I'll be a Vista boy for ever!
