Yahoo Board To Determine Fate Of Company Today

Sources have indicated to us that Yahoo has scheduled a special board of directors meeting on Friday to determine, effectively, the fate of the company. After a week of hectic negotiating, it’s clear that no one is going to step in with a competing acquisition offer to what Microsoft put on the table last Friday - $31 per share. Softbank, the last real chance for a competing bid, bowed out today and said they would not be challenging the Microsoft offer.
There are only two options left. Accept the offer in principal, and try to increase the price with no negotiating leverage at all, or do a deal with Google to outsource search advertising and, likely, search itself.
The board, we’ve heard, is basically being told by outside advisors to take the Microsoft deal. But we’ve also heard that a contingent of senior executives at Yahoo, who are willing to do literally anything to thwart a Microsoft takeover, are pushing for the Google deal and will present their case at the meeting.

I hope Yahoo remains the way it is even if MS takes over. I don't use it for a search engine but I use it for e-mail and other stuff.

Yahoo board to meet next week on bid: report

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo's board members are formally discussing Microsoft Corp's $42 billion unsolicited offer for the company and have scheduled an in-person meeting for next week, the All Things Digital blog reported on Friday.

Board members will have discussed the bid by phone on Friday and are expected to meet next Wednesday at Yahoo headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, the blog said, citing unnamed sources.
A Yahoo spokeswoman, commenting on an earlier report that the board was meeting on Friday, said the company was still "carefully and thoroughly evaluating" the Microsoft offer but would not say when its directors plan to meet. The company declined to comment on reports of a Wednesday meeting.
Microsoft made its offer public on February 1.
Yahoo has sought an alternate tie-up with Web search leader Google Inc to maintain its independence. Should it pursue the Microsoft offer, it is expected to seek a higher price than the current cash and stock offer, now valued at about $29 per share.
Analysts have said Microsoft could be persuaded to raise its bid to make it easier for Yahoo co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang and his board to accept it.

Sunday Paper: Yahoo Board rejects MS Buyout. Great news but why did'nt the SEC reject it as monopolistic?

Yahoo needs to sell or find a partner before they go under.

Why would you say that? Gross profit 4th Q 2007 is up 14% over the same period last year at 1,130 million $US
Isn't that enough?

Re: Yahoo Board To Determine Fate Of Company Today

You gotta wonder why M$ is willing to pay 45+/- Billion for a company that has assets of slightly over 12 Billion.. Is the Yahoo brand worth 33 billion?
It just goes to show you how out of touch big business is , and how far managers will go to inflate stock prices for their own gain..
If this were to go through it'll likely sink both companies...
Maybe that's for the best in the long run, but how many employees are we talking here, and how much do they contribute to the overall picture in taxes and consumer spending?

Have a look at the pdf I linked to.... It sure doesn't look like a company in trouble from the numbers.... They're up across the board..

Re: Yahoo Board To Determine Fate Of Company Today

Maybe I'm missing something.....

but to me MS has NO choice....

They have to go to the net-----and quickly----it's the future....

The days of the MS Office cash cow and holding folks hostage with their OS are beginning to come to a close....

And they can see the writing on the wall.....

Their only hope of continued dominance is a tremendously strong presence/vision on the net...

and they DON'T have that now.

I think all the scrambling with the "Live" series of stuff is desparation on MS's part

Live OneCare
Live Workspaces
Live PhotoGallery
Live this
Live that

It's Microsofts desparate effort to become relavant again----on the net

And none of the stuff seems coordinated with the other products----no overall tying vision-----or control.......Live This duplicates what Live That does----but they don't work well together....etc. etc.....

Just a bunch of swords thrust into the shifting sands......

and they are not capturing any market share, or enthusiasim, or control....-----of anything.

Boys, they NEED Yahoo a lot more than Yahoo needs them...

And everyone KNOWS it!!

Oh how the mighty have fallen.....

but----not to worry----when the company finally crashes----the US Government will bail them out.....

Re: Yahoo Board To Determine Fate Of Company Today

You're right John, and that's exactly why the takeover shouldn't be allowed... M$ obviously doesn't have what it takes to be a presence on the web and they'd just take Yahoo down with them..
