Shares took a big hit today, seems Intel may not be doing as well as everyone may think.

Intel net drops 57% in 2d quarter

July 20, 2006

Intel Corp. reported its biggest profit drop in more than four years and said it is unlikely to meet its full-year forecast after losing sales to Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The world's largest semiconductor maker said second-quarter net income fell 57 percent to $885 million, or 15 cents a share, from $2.04 billion, or 33 cents, a year earlier. Sales dropped 13 percent to $8 billion, the bottom of Intel's forecast, the Santa Clara, Calif., company said.

Analysts expected Intel to turn a profit of 14 cents per share.

Market share gains by AMD, the number two maker of processors for personal computers, prompted Intel chief executive Paul Otellini to speed the introduction of products and slash prices. The anticipation of discounts starting this month led customers to delay purchases.

Intel forecast third-quarter sales will fall to between $8.3 billion and $8.9 billion, below an average estimate of $9.04 billion in a Thomson Financial survey of 27 analysts. (Bloomberg)

Thumbs up

I was about to build an AMD system. My present rig still does all I need but I have reached the end of its upgrade path, and my Wife needs a new rig (my present one ). When I saw the preliminary Core 2 Duo results I decided to wait. I am going to build a Core 2 Duo rig as soon as the MOBO situation settles down a little. I want to see if Asus will anounce a new board in the next month.
AMD will not die, they will fight back but I think they will strugle for a few years and in the mean time it looks like Intel has learned a valuable lesson, one that will benefit not only them but many of us.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the Conroe Eldonko. Methinks the AMD fanbois are clutching at straws a bit lately.

Great Anaology there. I totally agree with you. Though I often ask for Mt. Dew.

Seriously though as long as there are atleast 2 makers then we shall benefit the most. Each will be pushing the limits further and further.

Same here, I just go for whatever performance / needs I can get.

When I got my P4 2.4C, I didn't like the AMD Athlon XP line... couldn't care much less. After the advent of the Athlon 64s, I thought twice before recommending someone an Intel rig. Sure enough I had about 6 or 7 AMD rigs I made for people. I elected that my next build would be an AMD for sure.

But now, Conroe has stole the glamour of the past few years of the amazing Athlon 64 line, so instead, I sold my old PIII 1GHz (CUSL2-C, anyone? oh the memories:P ), and took the resulting funds to get myself a Conroe system and E6400 to play with... not a bad upgrade/replacement at all for about $300 extra for the parts I needed.

Anyways, I hope to see an AMD system in my household (for once!) in the future.

I just build when i feel its the best time to upgrade. I sold my previous intel stuff for decent cash and upgraded for a little extra. My 2.8 toledo still is snappy and quick and cool as i want it to be. Depends whos on top at the time to decide who ill go with in the future.

All I see is better hardware & cheaper prices competition is good in this arena as long as they keep chopping prices. It could only get better so now I'm running OS X, Linux, XP & Vista on Intel AMD & Apple it's all good man no worries.

With AMD supposedly calling one of their upcoming K8L breeds "altair" one of the choices in this poll just got a bit more relevant.

(I'd be surprised if they got as high as an AMD "Altair" 8800 though...)

This topic is always relevant. A lot has changed in the last 6mos because of Intel's progress and AMD's acquisition of ATI. Now AMD is forced to make major headway with K8L. I hope they do but I prefer K8L to fall between CD2 and Penryn families in performance.

I never did care for amd,
stability is more important than price, ...or the whinny drizzel about underdog vs big nasty company.
