Question AMD vs INTEL, Is the Battle Over, or Just Beginning?

OK, just when we thought Intel might need to roll over, play dead, and accept that there was another big dog in the junkyard, they come roaring back with the CORE architecture. By all initial appearances, Intel will be solidly back in the lead wearing the CPU performance crown.

AMDs next major core revision is quite a ways away (late 2007 ???) so they are going to have to ride the wave of their current X2, Opteron, and FX success. As we speak, AMD is EOLing quite a few CPUs and I don't think it is a coincidence that we are in the middle of the CORE release party.

Exciting times indeadd for us as we can all hope that this competition will still benefit the consumer. You can find some incredible deals on "goog" CPUs these days if you don't absolutely have to have a Conroe or FX series.

All of this brings me back to the old days of "fanboism" and AMD vs Intel battles we have seen. IMO, AMD has established themselves as a major player and cannot be dismissed as many Intel loyalists did in the past. And, I think AMD might be the best thing that ever happened to Intel as AMD finally forced Intel to abandon Netburst.

So, try to think both retrospectively and long term for the future. Where does this battle lead? The poll itself is not going to be all that revealing here but, please try to back up your opinion with facts. In spite of the title here, we'd like to see some discussion, not a war.

Mike.

One thing that I haven't seen discussed surrounding the new core architecture, is that a large part of Intels' facilities are in a country that's currently embroiled in a war ..... Does anyone know if these new chips will be manufactured in Malasia etc, or does Intel intend to make them in Israel?

If the're booking on the Israeli facilities handling the demand and full blown war spreads to Syria and Iran, our bubble could get popped before it's even inflated...

I don't think there will ever be a "war" winner. AMD will eventually be equal - just like the Coke VS Pepsi war. I always ask for a Coke, and if the waitress says "Is Pepsi ok?" I say yes.

Either AMd is going to have to come down in price bigtime on the FX series or I can't see sales being very good for AMD when a faster cheaper chip is available from Intel. There will always be the diehard fans that will continue to buy them just out of loyalty I suppose and then there will be a few uninformed consumers that may get a few but all in all I can see a hard road for AMD. It will be interesting to see how it all washes out but not like I'm trying to get rid of my still newish FX rig for a Conroe system. It still totally smokes anything out and that will be coming out in the next year at least.

If the chips were being made in Lebenon it might be something to worry about but not many bombs will fall on Isreal I don't think. Hezballa (spelling?) has already exahusted their meger supply of bombs and Isreal is pretty much going to kick butt. Course the FX chips probably are a bit safer in Dresden Germany lol.

IMO, an FX upgrade only makes sense "IF" AMD will drop prices on the FX-60. And, this would only make sense for a person that has an excellent 939 rig with some good DDR already on hand. FX-62 reuqires AM2 and of course DDR2 so the user would be forced to "upgrade" the memory as well and then buy a MOBO. So, if you have to buy a CPU, MOBO, and memory, then Conroe is the only thing that makes sense. And, a good 939 Opteron makes MUCH more sense than an FX60 anyways if you don't mind OCing.

For anyone getting a totally new system IMO Intel is the best choice right now. And for gamers, when the Nvidia/SLI capable MOBOs for Conroe come out, those should be some screamers.

However, again IMO, some "bargain" or bang per buck gaming systems (DX10 compatibility not withstanding) based on AMD 939 gear should be great this fall. It's going to be interesting.

Yep I would consider shelling out for an FX/60 if the price went down to say around $400 or less. I know that's probably not realistic but otherwise I am happy with my FX/57. It is actually a faster gaming chip by 200MHZ with single threaded games which of course most still are and believe it or not the FX/57 multitasks incredibly well for a single core IMO. Again I agree an upgrade to the 62 would be foolish in light of the Conroe where you would basically have to build a whole new rig except for drives, video, PSU etc. Not going to happen with me lol.

I am not a fanboy, I buy on my specs. Last rig was AMD because they were they clear winner. My last rig prior to that was a RDram based Northwood. I see Intel again in my near future.

Hopefully sometime in Q3/Q4, I will build a brand new system using the latest and greatest.

My X2 rig now still has floppy, PATA, AGP, etc!

I built my X2 rig back in January. Part of the reason I went AMD this time, was I didn't like the idea of having to buy a boatload of DDR2 memory.

Wouldn't want to be without it. It runs everything just fine.

We all know Intel will win this battle but I'm not sure if the battle has begun. I think Intel will be in the lead for at least the next year, maybe two. Its gonna be great for us consumers and PC enthusiast.

AMD will compete on price-performance until they get the next best thing out. The price cuts on the 24th on some chips are huge. When you can get a 5000+ x2 for a couple hundred you may think twice before going with Conroe.
