I've been struggling with this problem as well since Christmas of 2005.

I got my computer in August 2005:

-Big 'ol XION case with a decent PSU + a good amount of cooling (I bought even more tho)
-AMD Althlon 64 3200+ (Socket 939) with a heatsink/fan that weighs more than my PSU sitting on it. I think the inside of my comp snows every now and then .
-MSI RS480M2-IL MotherBoard (A.k.a. MS-7093)
-----Has the onboard Video Card: ATi RADEON XPRESS X200
-2 512 meg sticks of corsair RAM
-Western digital HD. (Im not certain the exact model of it. I know its aprox. 75 gig and part of its name is "Raptor". Its very fast)
-Lite-ON DVD/RW.

I had no problems with it. Then on Christmas, I reccieved the X1800XL 128MB PCI-e from Sapphire. An HOUR into playing games with it, my comp first locked up. I tried a ton of things and nothing helped. Later that day I reformatted and that did nothing. (Note: I left the card in during the reformat. Don't know if that negatively affected it.) I tried many many drivers including the ones on the disk, the lates ATi ones, the latest Sapphire ones, and the latest Omega ones. I even went out and bought a more powerful PSU. Nothing helped. After many more useless tips and tricks and several more reformats, I've recently decided to keep the x1800xl out of my computer untill I know I can fix this. This most recent reformat (Just a few days ago) was done with the x1800xl out of the mobo. I did a full windows update and installed drivers for my XPRESS 200 and it works fine. I've had no problems. Albeit, it can't run games for crap, at least it doesn't crash.

I got lock-ups with the looping sound most of the time with my x1800xl. Some after 30 seconds, some after 2 hours. Occasionally, I got a BSOD, and sometimes my computer just rebooted randomly. This has happened in every 3d game I play. I usually play Counter-Strike 1.6 and Half-Life 2 (Along with many HL2 mods). Its a shame that a 6 month old card can't run games from 1999 w/o crashing...

I've seen plenty of fixes in this thread, but I haven't seen any relating to PCI-e cards. So, does anyone have some help to offer?

Thanks in advance.

*bump*

Sorry to seem impatient, but this forum is really the last place I am even going to bother looking for help before I trade my card in.

Have you tried the Omega drivers for ATI? Have you tried RMAing the card?

Yes, in my post I said I tried Omega's. No, I haven't RMA'd it. I am trying to hold RMAing as a last resort.

It's likely it is either an issue with the hardware, or more so a driver conflict. Lord knows what driver is conflicting. What does the event viewer show for errors or messages?

They may be standard, but they are useful in narrowing down the issue.

I have a Toshiba A40. It's dying immediately with the ati2dvag death gambit as everyone else on this list describes. The computer only runs in VGA mode now. Cobrakaun's solution didn't work. WhiteTIGER says try Omega (Catalyst) drivers, but other have said the Catalyst drivers are a disaster, so I haven't tried it yet. Suggestions please?

I used the excellent take-apart instructions by Laptop Freak to disassemble the machine and clean it out. It wasn't clogged up at all and I could see both fans working. Surprisingly, it wasn't running hot - though before I took it apart it could get very hot. Perhaps the heat sink fan was stuck.

Anyway, it continued dying, so I turned my attention to the reported ati2dvag problem. I started an incremental removal of ATI software, beginning with the ATI Control Panel.

And that seems to have resolved the issue. It has been running for a few days now, no problemo. Didn't have to remove any drivers or reinstall anything.

I suspect bad memory

I just started getting the dreaded "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop" blue screen of death on my Dell Lattitude D610 after installing new memory. After searching around the Internet and reading here, I have noticed that some others indicated that they had performed a memory upgrade prior to the problem, too.

OK, it's not the memory

I removed the new memory from my Dell Lattitude D610 and I still get the dreaded "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop."

Now I believe it's a heat problem

When I upgraded the RAM in my Dell Lattitude D610, I sat it on a towel so it would not get scratched when I flipped it over. After installing the RAM, I tried running my Dell Lattitude D610 (while it still sat on the towel). This is when my "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop" problems started.

At first, I assumed the new memory was bad. I switched back to the old memory and tried it again (again still sitting on that towel). The "ati2dvag.dll infinite loop" problem persisted.

I noticed that this model of Dell laptop has vents on the bottom side. Even without the towel, it had almost no clearance for ventilation. The towel eliminated what little ventilation it did get. I removed the towel and tried it again. The ati2dvag.dll problem was gone. I reinstalled the new RAM. Still no ati2dvag.dll problem.

Now, I believe this is a thermal problem with the ATI hardware. This would
explain why there are no drivers available to fix this problem.
