Yeah, the article compares the i950 which is 3.06GHz against a 2.93GHz Lynnfield and the i950 barely edges it out. This is coming from an el cheapo P55 against an X58 though I'm assuming. Quit a big difference in power between those two.

I am not looking for performance per watt because of the money worries. I just want my next system to run as cool or cooler in my medium sized Antec Gamer 300 case. I may end up getting an X58 myself next year because I like it to but I doubt it. Even though Gulftown will run on X58 I believe Intel will have a new chipset next year or else they have a lot to add to X58 (USB3, SATA3, Braidwood?sp.).

Intel explains future Core i7, i5, i3 branding

Intel has spilled the beans on its future CPU naming, claiming to have acted in an effort to simplify things

The Core 2 Duo and Quad brands will vanish and will be replaced/modified progressively after Lynnfield arrives with Core i3, i5 and i7 monikers. That's not to say Lynnfield equals Core i5 though.

Instead, Lynnfield will span Core i5 and Core i7 brands and the choice of brand will vary between features (like HyperThreading) and processor performance...

Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

I read all i7's will disappear exept EE's. To me 32nm or 45nm doesn't matter for OCing or much for power because they are both great unless Intel makes the 32nm's go to +3.5GHz. Who wants a six-core? 4 core + 4HT is great.

I'm torn on whether to upgrade now or wait for Lynnfield...Lynnfield seems like a step down in terms of performance so I don't quite get the anticipation...or is everyone just looking forward to a cheaper Nehalem chip?...plus Lynnfield has no real upgrade path since it is using a separate socket from the Core i7 ones

Sandog: why is Lynnfield such a big deal?

Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

Hey polonyc2,

From my understanding the Lynnfield is identical to i7 except it has a dual memory controller instead of 3 and it has DMI bus instead of QPI. All else is the same like cache, instructions, HT, etc. So what are you missing? Your missing 3 channel DDR3 which is not a significant performance enhancer IMO and you don't have the wide/faster QPI bus but Intel put 16 lanes along with the DMI bus to get you PCIe 1x16X or 2x8X. The IOH 10 chipset is the same.

The article and others show the 2.93GHz Lynnfield is on par with a i950 3.06GHz i7. The i7 was running on a 3 channel X58. That is why Intel is discontinuing the i7 950 and replacing it with the i7 960 3.2GHz because the Lynnfield makes it obsolete.

So, the plusses for Lynnfield are:
1. Newer revision CPU
2. fairly equal to i7 in performance at same clock
3. cooler running CPU especially at idle
4. less expensive than i7
5. much cheaper chipset
6. much cooler running chipset
7.
8.
9.
10. and the no. 10 reason, it does x4 speed bins in Turbo mode for single threads. The i7 only does x1 speed bin for <4 threads and x2 for single threads.

When Lynnfield is here we will see the performance results and the system power savings against i7/X58.

Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

Also want to add that the new Lynnfield chipsets (P55/P57) will have newer and better tech. on them like Braidwood Turbo memory, SATA3, and USB3. It has been proven in the past to that the mainstream chipsets OC better than the high end such as P35 which outdid the X48 in performance in many reviews and the P45 is also a top OCer. These are non-Intel mobo's ofcourse.

Intel almost got it right...where they messed up is that Intel will officially be offering two platforms for Core i7, LGA-1366 with the X58 chipset and the lower-cost LGA-1156 socket with the P55 chipset...will definitely cause confusion

It sounds to me the new CPU naming scheme is bonkers. Stars?!?! Meh.

Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

LOL, OK surprise, I am coming to Intels rescue. OK Intel has a boatload of chips. That comes from having so many different fabs and putting out every TIC & TOC. Also that article's author Kongo posted needs to relax or he's going to blow a big vein in his head. I don't know how many times he called Intel stupid but it appears he's really ticked off. I guess you find the only thing you can bash Intel about and run with it. Anyway, let's really state why Intels new naming scheme might cause trouble. It's because most people buying CPU's are idiots and the naming scheme needs idiot proofing.

What I want to know is will a Core i5 with 6 stars deliver better performance than an i7 with 1 star??? cos if it does Intel is going to be in serious poo with consumers...

Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

Nobody will know ANYTHING till the processors actually come out....

Until a group of folks who owe allegience to no one.....

Independent testers at the various tech sites.....

Well, until THEY test and report...

To believe ANY of this Intel marketing hype/confusion....

Seems pure folly to me.

I just remember all the hype about Prescott being sooooo much better with more features than my trusty old Northwood.....

Riiiiiiight......

And I've got swamp land in Florida to sell you......
