Re: AnandTech Article - New Intel CPU's and chipsets coming!

Gee willakers that sound like a good idea. I've looked at those before on NE but the higher versions. The Xeons are much better binned/more robust/better built processors but they have a different socket to my understanding. ECC is great but you don't want to OC here.

The XEON L3426 takes a standard LGA 1156 socket.

When I was looking at the i7 systems with the LGA 1366 socket, boards like
ASUS P6T7 WS Supercomputer stated that ECC was only supported when
a XEON W3500 or E5500 series processor was installed, but not with the i7.
Same was true for Supemicro motherboards. So there seems to be XEON and Desktop processors that can share the same LGA 1366 socket.

You are right, the XEONS are not for overclocking. Heck, takes longer to send 9 bits down the bus instead of 8. But I will give up a few FPS knowing that each memory fetch is tested. Still though, for an all around chip, this is nice.

Haven't seen a board yet to support the new XEON, but expect one from ASUS or Supermicro soon. Maybe even a server board from Intel.
