Asus p7p55d

Any comments on this board? I have it in hand now and will configure it with an i7860, and 8G 1333 RAM. This was unplanned so I am scurrying around the net concerning this board. All I read is good.

Will build with my new 5850 and other existing periphs. Waiting for W7 retail to arrive.

TIA

Jim

Re: Asus p7p55d

I hope so. This is a replacement board for the defunct Gigabyte build of a month or so ago. Instead of monies returned I got this board. It's sells for more than I was owed - so, we'll give it a try.

This is a new board, factory sealed box, and valid serial numbers - I checked with ASUS.

I did numerous successful ASUS builds, so I am confident this will be no different. Gotta get a i7-860 and 8G RAM now. Everything should be arriving before Win7 is released - then will give it a go when I have the new OS. Now I'll go 64bit..

Did some googling, only escoteric issue is the new RAM retention clips. Clips are only on one end as not to interfere with GPU. Need to ensure sticks are seated properly.

Thanks Skully

Jim T.

Question Re: Asus p7p55d

Is your Asus P7P55D the Deluxe or Premium model? I looked it up on Newegg and they have about 6 models listed. I am curious as how this will work out for you. Good luck!

Re: Asus p7p55d

It's this one. Not that it matters for me - this one only does Crossfire, no SLI! When I recv W7, I'll get into this. I'll report on the outcome.

Newegg.com - ASUS P7P55D LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Re: Asus p7p55d

I see most of the Asus boards are using Via sound. Does anyone have any experience with Via on board sound solutions? Seems like everyone was using Realtek on board sound and some have switched to Via. I sure like the Realtek on board on the rig in my sig and good driver support to boot.

Re: Asus p7p55d

At one time or another I have listened to both. Although not an audiophile - to me the onboard sound had a high pitch, crackling, and a lack of what I call depth. I have always used a soundcard since.

Since you are going to use a discrete solution it will not matter how good or bad the onboard is. I can only compare my old SB Audigy gamer to the ALC888 on my board and there is no comparison. The onboard blows the Audigy. The onboard sound is much richer sounding. Also Realtek has way better driver support than Creative ever had.

Re: Asus p7p55d

Onboard audio was of great interest to me. I did not want to spent monies on the alternative. As a result of listening, (on other than this board) I subsequently went with a discrete solution. I have not listened to the onboard sound for this board, but'll I'll give it a try, audio card or not.

Re: Asus p7p55d

Motherboard Bench Test with Radeon 5850. Memtest 400 ok!

http://content.glidesociety.com/imag...e-bc4819df8587

Very easy to configure. Booted up at first try.

As you can see - the GPU is not exceptionally long, its heavy though.

i7-860

KVR 4x2G 1333

Corsair 620 Modular PSU

Will install into case when W7 arrives.

Re: Asus p7p55d

Thanks John - this board suits me. It was a replacement for a defunct Gigabyte with older chipset. So I'm ahead!!!

ASUS was one of my first boards and I ditto the attributes concerning the company. I updated to the newest BIOS before I even did anything else. That solved some problems others were having. Wierd with the DIMM sockets having only one clip per DIMM. The sticks are tight and are detected in the BIOS and Memtest. That probaly matters the most.

Bring on win 7!!!

Re: Asus p7p55d

I am in the process of selecting components for this board So far an i5, ASUS 5750 video and 8GB of RAM as you did. However, I've been reading about this board's inability to show all the RAM, and the RAM manufacturers recommend only triple channel sets. Can you comment on this?
