Unhappy CUSL2-M Wake on LAN

I got a new system last week - a CUSL2-M board with onboard video, audio, and network (3c920).

Everything's working great, running Win2000 pro. But I can't get the "wake on lan" stuff to work. I have looked all over the 'net for someone that has this working, but haven't found anything.

My understanding is that the 3c920 onboard network card is based on the 3com 3c905c network card, which supports wake on lan. I have client software that will send the "magic packet" to this machine with the CUSL2-M, but nothing happens.

There is a yellow light next to the RJ45 connector in back, indicating (I think) that the network chip has power even when the machine is turned off. When I send the packet, I see a quick blink of a green light, indicating that some traffic was detected. But...nothing happens.

Finally, I have enabled "wake on lan" in the BIOS settings under power control. Is there another setting somewhere that I am missing? Maybe a different driver? (I'm using the driver that got installed automatically from the Win2000 cd during install.)

Anyone out there have wake on lan working with the CUSL2-M onboard network card?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I have a CUSL2-C and the Wake on LAN does not work for me either. I believe that my problem is my power supply (I have some old cheap generic brand) not keeping the proper voltage when the pc is off. The manual (yes I actually read it!) states something about the ps having to supply a certain voltage for it to work.

This may be too obvious, but have you guys installed the "wake on LAN" wiring between the LAN card and the WOL connector on the mobo? And, as kadron noted, you need an ATX power supply with at least 720 milliamps of +5VDC standby power for this to work. If you get the "You can now safely turn off your computer" message when powering down, your PS will definitely NOT support wake on LAN.

I'm not sure if this will work (I don't have an onbaord NIC) but I've seen it before......

Try using the 3Com NIC doctor. Get the latest drivers from the 3Com website and install the NIC doctor. Click Start - Run - "Tcaudiag - a" (minus the "s of course ). This gives you the advanced NIC doctor control panel with the Wake Up On Lan additional properties. Another thing to note is that the newest drivers should install another tab in the device manager properties for the NIC (under Win98) relating to power managment, have a look and see if anything in there helps as well.

I definately installed the WOL cable because I was excited this mobo supported it. My old one did not (AbitLX6). When it didn't work I read the info on the power supply.

Good info Ha_rry. Whe I get my new ps, if I still have problems I'll check it out. I have a D-Link card, but I'll try it anyway. D-Link knows nothing. No extra cash for a new ps right now, I'm leaving for Bermuda on Monday! I'll make sure I have a drink for all of you!

Hey kadron,
Figured you had the cable in place, but it never hurts to check! Bermuda, eh? And here I sit with a bum knee, going nowhere...major bummer. Make it a really insane umbrella drink!

Ski, no problem. Must always start with the basics. (Is it plugged in? turned on? etc)

First drink is for you!!!

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I still don't have this working. A couple quick follow-up points and questions:

- I do NOT have a wire connecting the ethernet chip to the wake on lan connector. Since I have an onboard enet card, I have been lead to believe that this is taken care of "internally". From
3com partner website

"Enhanced Remote Wake Up also includes the elimination of the Remote Wake Up (RWU) cable by supporting RWU through the PCI bus, per the PCI 2.2 specification"

- It seems more likely that I do NOT have an appropriate power supply that supports the 720 mA in standby mode. Question is, how/where do I find one that does support this? My power supply doesn't mention any standby mode in the docs, so I assume this is a bad sign.

- Finally, there is a light on the mboard and on the RJ45 connector in the back that ARE BOTH ON even when the power is turned off. My assumption was that this is telling me that there IS power available when the machine is off. Any idea what else the lights would be telling me?

Thanks again.
