Ideas? Burnt out ICH5R chip on P4P800-ED!

OK, check this out ...

Case LED's (power and IDE) light up when you turn on the power supply eventhough you haven't yet pressed the power on button. When you do, fans spin up but thats it - no display, no boot, no action at all.

Any ideas what could cause this?

I'm replacing the board with another P4P800-ED I have on hand (reseller) but I don't want to risk ruining it also so I want to find the cause.

WOW! That's what I call fried
Did this happen the first time you gave the mobo power, and did you check the PSU ATX and 12v connectors to see if there is any damage there?
I have never seen anything like that before, and have seen plenty of strange **** I never imagined though

Sorry, forgot the strange part. This machines been working perfectly for 6 weeks when this happened after a reboot!

Can't see any other damage anywhere on the board (e.g. power connectors)

Nope, weather was perfectly calm, not hot, not cold, no wind, no rain, no lightning.

I'm really bewildered here and scared that unless I can put my finger on the cause I could fry the new board too.

Maybe a voltage regulator that went south and caused the chip to fry, if your sure the board did not get grounded then just rma the thing. That is serious bummer man! Good luck!

I know you are not suposed to apply Both Serial ATA Power AND Legacy Hard Drive power connectors to a SATA drive that has Legacy power connectors available on it.

But that thing looks like it got hit with a BFG2000 !!

Have you tried that PSU in another PC? It is possible that one of the capacitors in the PSU popped, or one on the mainboard. As smurfer mentioned, check the mosfets and capacitors wherever you can to see if there is any damage. I would say the problem is somewhere on the board and not in the PSU, but you never know.
If you have an old PC to test the PSU with it would be a good idea.

The same thing happened to me yesterday on my Asus P4P800-ED. I plugged in my digital camera to the USB port (which I have done hundreds of times already) and the machine locked up, then shut down. Almost immediately I noticed the smell....

I've attached a picture.

I ended up RMA'ing the board to the supplier who sent it to the ASUS service centre in Sydney AUS. After going back and forth saying they would repair the board but were waiting on parts (probably a new chip) I hassled them into replacing it because I couldn't wait any longer.

What I found out though was that they get many RMA's for exactly the same problem and they let slip that this is caused by a fault in the design on the mobo !!! A well kept secret and risk you take if you buy this board.

They haven't fixed this with a newer revision and aren't going to.

Wow that looks serious and it concerns me. The sound windows makes when you connect a USB device has been sounding randomly a few times without anything being connected or disconnected. Hope this isnt a widespread problem. Board has been running no problem for now. Cant believe this is happening with ASUS hardware. Good info thanks.

The system bus runs at 267MHz (66MHz quad-pumped) on the P4C800-E (i875P), on the P4P800-E (I865PE) it should run the same, but in fact runs at 400MHz (100MHz quad-pumped). UNLESS you overclock the FSB up from 200, it's strange, but true.

This has to do with the trick that Asus used to get PAT with the i865PE.

What this has to do with the ICH5R? Well, this fella in connected directly to the system bus.

I guess that they upped the voltage a bit too much to get more stability in a recent revision and ended up ********** the reliability for good.
