| Quick update: we took all the cards out of the old board, then tested with no memory, then one stick, then two, then video. Right now, it looks like a defective AGP slot. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen an issue related to AGP manufacture or implementation. I'll be glad when AGP is replaced by PCI Express. I'll check in later after we get the new board in... |

| The new board is up and running. It seems even faster than the previous board, but you'll forgive me if I don't run any benchmarks for a while. Right now my only concern is stability. I haven't yet checked the BIOS to see at what settings the memory is running, but I will get around to that. More good news-it looks like we won't have to re-install XP right away. Maybe not at all if it continues to run as well as it's running right now. Crossing my fingers... |

| The new one shipped with with the 05 BIOS. SPD settings are 5-2-2-2. (!) We're now installing the sound card... |

| Sound card's in and we're booting to the desktop. This system is fast. As Mrs. TQ so euphemistically put it: "It's slicker than snot". |

I haven't yet heard of anyone purchasing a board with a later BIOS than 05. The first thing I did was to update my BIOS to ver 09, which if I am not mistaken also includes a later RAID internal driver update. Presumably you haven't changed the SPD memory settings yet... or have you? -David-

This system is my workstation. It's mission critical. Once I'm convinced of its stabilty I'll run some benchmarks for curiosity's sake but as long as it likes 5-2-2-2 that's where the memory timings will remain.

What are you BIOS settings especially, I suppose your FSB ("Burn-in" on or off) and all the settings related to memory? I'm real interested.

| Heck, I could never get the system stable at 6-2-2-2, so I was very surprised to see 5-2-2-2 as SPD. So far it's doing great. I've done some editing, Mrs. TQ has balanced our bank account and gotten caught up on billing and nothing unexpected has happened. It's what I would expect from an Intel board/system. I received a reply from Intel to my last message and we took the opportunity to ask for an RMA for the old board. |

Sorry guys, but I can't quite see you reasoning behind this one. Surely if Intel has released an official BIOS update (which 09 is) and which it is presumably using it on current production boards; as I see it you have nothing to lose by upgrading a new board from an earlier release, such as 05, before starting an OS instalation. Presumably you will use the latest video and sound card drivers etc, so why not go with the latest BIOS upgrade also?... it's not as if we have heard anything bad about it either... well not that I know of anyway! -David-

| Hey David, You have the D865PERL, correct? Just out of curiosity what does CPUZ say about your performance mode, is it enabled or disabled?

| Well, I'm running P05 and CPU-Z just informed me that "performance mode" is enabled, which I NEVER got with P09 on my older board. I'm getting my memory to run at 5-2-2-2. Things are both stable AND fast. I'm not (and have no plans to) run a RAID array on this machine. Why, pray tell, should I then "upgrade" my BIOS to P09? Wait, that's a purely rhetorical question since I will not under any circumstances take a risk when things are working perfectly. |
