Is this even a D875PBZ thread anymore?

I joined the club yesterday with a 302 revision board. P4 3.0ghz, 2x512 DDR400 Corsair "Value Select" CAS2.5 memory. The BIOS is apparently P18, but I haven't had anything happen out of the ordinary. My Radeon 9800 Pro automatically set itself to AGP8X and it's survived a Final Fantasy XI session and a run through of 3DMark 2001SE (which is outdated enough to say my FSB is over *18000Mhz*). With the combination of the seasonic PSU, Zalman 7000 Aluminum HSF, the Seagate hard drive, and the quiet case fans, it's hard to tell the thing is on!

Re-doing PC's these days is quite a chore. After pulling out the old hardware, I set this new stuff up, installed XP on the new Seagate SATA drive, and when I put the old PATA drive on to try to get some data from it, the system couldn't figure out which one to boot, so neither would. I had to set up the old board and everything just to boot the old hard drive so I could map to it to get stuff from it. Ugh. And moving 60+GB, network or not, it just takes a LONG time.

So both of my desktops are not ASUS anymore.. It's been a long time since I didn't have an ASUS board in this case!

LOL, ofcourse silly. In fact this thread is so D875PBZLK encompassing that we talk about how sun flares effect TRas when using IDCC with a KVM and Logitech mouse.

Welcome back.

Hi Sandog,

Question: how do you tell what temp your vidcard is running? Is there a 3rd party utility that shows this, or is it something endemic to the XT?

I had (before the Koolance) an external temp probe taped onto the heat sink of my 9800 Pro, and it showed the temp at around 45c. Of course, the actual core temp of the GPU would have been quite a bit hotter, but I used it more for comparative tests when overclocking the card (and trying different heat sinks).

Best,
Bill

Just an FYI:

For someone who wants a guaranteed rev 302 board, and doesn't mind paying $189, Fry's is stocking them now. I've been in 3 different SoCal Fry's over the past week and all of them have had lots of rev 302's, as well as rev 206 boards.

The 9800XT has a GPU temp sensor in it. And almost every temp reading I've seen has been in the high 60°C to mid 70°C range too. I guess the GPU's run hot like NB's.

D875PBZ Version 207?!?

Was anybody aware that there was (is?) a version 207 of this board? I was checking out requirements last night, getting ready for the 3.2 GHz Prescott, and ran across this:

D875PBZ Processor Chart

I thought it was 205/206 and then 301/302. Man, there's a lot of PCN's with this board!

Thanks, Ralf! I did not know that.

LOL, I do play on my computer, thats how I find my problems.
The only game I play, CFS2 is pretty lame(graphics-wise) to more recent games, so I depend on video production, especially video rendering, to really see where the performance lies. Like Indy cars, the CPU use goes to near full throttle and stays there for a couple hours. On my PIII850, producing MPEG2 files for DVDs would dim the lights in the room.

I installed a Maxtor MaXLine Plus II hard drive, it seems much more quiet and, in some quick Sandra tests, has significantly better performance than the Diamond Max Plus9 that is my boot drive. Two of them in a RAID 0 would be awesome, but 500G(actually about 470G) would be a lot of lost data if a drive should fail. Now let's see if the drive will hold up under some heavy use.

Hi Bill,

I am sure you will be VERY interested in their response!

When asked how I had installed the CPU, I honestly (and possibly rather foolishly) said that I had carefully removed the grey Intel 'gunk pad' first and applied Arctic Silver 5 instead.

I was then informed that by doing so I had voided my warranty! (Presumably only on the CPU and not the motherboard... although I'm not sure... possibly both!)

Not really what I wanted (or needed) to hear, particularly as they are both retail boxed products, which come with an Intel Five Year guarantee !

They also advised me (after checking first!) that the sensor is actually built into the CPU itself, rather than being on the motherboard, as I had suspected.

Regarding the high temperature reported by the BIOS, I have been advised to:

1) Remove the CMOS battery (and then replace it!)
2) Reflash the BIOS to P22 again, using the 'DOS method'.
3) If the temp. is still showing high, then reflash back to P18 and check it again!
4) Let them know the results!

This is what I will now do!

Cheers,

-David-

Hi David,

Thanks for the info! Void your warranty by removing the pad? Oh, please. I'd like to see them try that one in court. That's plain ridiculous.

And it appears that the real problem all along is your battery. You need a super-charged, NASA-sourced battery for best speed and compatibility.

Keep us posted on what happens next.

Best,
Bill

The race for quality has no finish line- so technically, it's more like a death march.

Back in the days I had to contact Intel about my CPU, I was using AS3 and I told them the same thing. The warranty was not voided. AMD on the other hand is very explicit about this. If you want to keep the warranty with an AMD you have to use the HSF and pad that came with the retail proc. I just had to use that warranty on two procs this past month and AMD never even questioned what I used on the procs. I did, however, send the procs back to them with the original HS pad still on the proc and imprinted on the HS. But like I said a few posts ago, I will now pay the for the extended warranty you can get through newegg because I will not have to deal with Intel or AMD with my latest procs purchase. I'm rather irked with AMD and Intel that you have to call long-distance during their normal working hours to handle a proc RMA. Stinkin' multi-billion companies with procs being associated to them and yet they don't even provide an 800 number? That's cheap, real cheap.

Hi,

I don't think that were so much concerned that I had removed the pad, but that I had used AS 5 instead of their pad !!

Anyway, I will try what they suggest first, and take it from there I think.

Thanks for your replies anyway... and for the tip about the battery Bill ! ... now I know where I was going wrong !!

Right... I have now removed and replaced the battery.

Reflashed to P22... no difference.

Flashed back to P18... CPU temp still showing 88-90 C

Called Intel Tech Support again, only to find that they close at 4 pm and won't of course now be open again until Monday morning... great!

In the meantime though, I might just try removing and replacing the heatsink; giving both that and the CPU another 'do' with TIM-clean and then applying some fresh AS 5, just to eliminate that as a possible source of the problem.... it can't do any harm I suppose!

Bummer, David. Methinks you have a bad MoBo sensor. Any way you can RMA it and get a replacement?
