I thought about waiting for Conroe or even just waiting for a newer BadAxe rev that would support Conroe... I usually don't buy new tech immediately, but instead wait for at least 2-3 months for the initial kinks to be worked out. This would have put my Conroe purchase at around September, and I just couldn't wait that long.

There may well be a 'better' motherboard for Conroe at that point anyway.

Koolance put the pumps in the reservoir but it looks like Intel went further and put the pump right on top of the CPU heat sink. This is a smart idea and hopefully I will be able to get a hold of one of these later.

I remember one poster ready to kiss AMD because of it's new heat pipe CPU cooler. Well it looks like Intel will have a better answer in their CPU cooler as well (end of year). It is funny how quickly things can change. Intel has been lagging for a couple of years now but it won't be long before their back in force. It is astounding the benchmarks that the Conroe is putting out. I am sure the 3.3GHzEE will be a monster. I read performance scales beautifully with Conroe clock speeds. Not only does Intel have an answer in all three processor markets (server, desktop, notebook) but they are moving to 16" wafers to print out the new .65nm chips. from 12" wafers. This is a 25% increase in area or chips per wafer at roughly the same cost. This means Intels chips will be cheaper. Intel has bigger wafers (heh) and is already at .65nm and looking at .45nm in a year. As long as the performance is competitive with the new chips, AMD will not beat Intel on price. You will be able to hear a mouse at AMD by the end of the year.

Remember the bashing in public AMD was putting on Intel with the Opteroni challenge? Well I guess Intel is finally ready. The proverbial 'shoe is on the other foot' applies here. It is time for Intel get some marketing publicity mileage off of some fan boy stunts and I hope I see some.

The thing I like most about the Conroe is the efficiency. You should be able to use just about any good custom HSF on these chips. The classic Zalman CNSP7000Al-Cu and Thermalright XP-90 come to mind. These are about as far as I want to go in HS size with air cooling the CPU. I hope to get the Conroe EE though and also that cool Intel water block if and when it comes out.

Right now I am planning on getting the 3.46EE Presler or 3.73EE if thats the case when they arrive next month so I will have something to tie me over until Conroe gets here. I know nobody agrees with me but besides the heat issues I liked the Prescot CPU. In my case it was very fast and I never had any problems with it. It ran like a Cadilac and I even ran two games before. UT2K3, and C&C Generals. Both were open while I was playing one of them. I am a little worried that the Conroe will be too snappy and not smooth like the Prescott. The Prescott ran everything the same way. Not too fast, not too slow, but just right. No matter what you through at it it did not hiccup. Anyway, when Conroe gets here I hope there are some softwares to take advantage of all this performance like Vista and UT2007.

I watched Rattner and Gargini, Gargini's had a tour of and Intel fabribcation plant which was pretty cool.

Here's some of the notes I took from Rattner which highlight the improvements added to Conroe.

4 instructions for each clock in 14 stage pipeline
Macro fusion is combining two instructions
Improvements to SSE for multimedia (faster execution of SSE)
Improved shared cache structure between the two cores
Improved set of algorithms to pre-fetch calculations
Better loading/storing to memory
Power gating shuts down unused sections to save power

Conroe has shown a 40% improvement in performance and a 40% reduction in power usage per clock over Netburst architectured chips. The Woodcrest server chip is seeing a 80% performance increase and 35% power decrease over previous server chips.

Hey guys,

I apologize to everybody for leaving for a spell unnanounced. I didn't expect or anticipate any worried posts so in hindsight that was a mistake. I will make an announcement before I take my forum vacations next time. Anyway it was good to have a break and I am glad to be back.

On Belesaruis's post, I think the D975 will remain an ICH7R chipset but I am not sure. Maybe you guys heard otherwise. Intel released the D975 early and it probably wasn't expecting to use the same ICH as the D955 but it had to. It's possible it could get a new ICH later with better FSB support. If it does I bet it won't arrive until Conroe EE version does since it is the game enthusiast platform board. At the end of the year would be a good time to take a hard look at upgrading because Conroe numbers will have become a reality and also AMD will have had time to respond with their new products. That is unless you decide to wait on quad-core

I've never brought an intel EE cpu before but I'm so happy with thier comeback I think the Conroe EE will be my first to welcome them back, also Intel were'nt lieing when they said they'd be trying to half the price of Intel D cpu's by the time conroe hit the shelfs, the Intel Pentium 4 805 Dual Core over here can be had for as little as £85 :eek: , hell at that price I'm gonna buy one just to play around with o/c etc, man I really can't wait to see how AMD responds over the next 12 months, hope they comeback with something intresting, for the consumer it can only be a win win situation. also loving the new logo's that come with the latest bios updates

(for the gen intel m/b's).

It appears, well over at the Inquirer that AMD does indeed have a backup plan with the "K8L", and DDR2-1066 support. Maybe that'll bring it all back a bit for AMD, only time will tell.

The high multiplier limits their overclocking potential but yeah I guess there's a little fun there to experiment with.

Not in the same league as a 920 though but then again only 50% the price. I'm sure Belisarius is reading this and thinks.....hell yeah

Anybody have the specs for the Conroe EE? I heard 3.0 or maybe 3.3GHz.

I don't believe AMD's move to DDR2 will be smooth at first nor do I think it will catch up to the Conroe. The only advantage to DDR3 right now I think is lower voltage.
