Maximum Memory?

What is the maximum memory that this board will support? The Intel site indicates 8 MB, but I have seen 16 MB listed elsewhere. 16 MB is what I believe the P45 will support.

I am interested in building a system used primarily for video editing, which will make use of a 64-bit editing application. I am very interested in a board that has significant memory expandability.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum BigFan

The chipset can handle 16GB supposedly but the DP45SG in particular will take 8GB's from reading this from here.

"System Memory Features
The Desktop Board supports the dual or single channel memory configurations defined
below:
  • Four 240-pin Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) connectors with gold-plated contacts.
  • 1333/1066/800 MHz DDR3 SDRAM interface
  • Unbuffered, non-registered single- or double-sided DIMMs
  • Non-ECC DDR3 memory
  • Serial Presence Detect (SPD) memory only
  • Up to 4 GB utilizing 512 Mb or 1 Gb technology
  • Up to 8 GB utilizing 1 Gb or 2 Gb technology
"
For now my board appears to mimick this tested memory chart. I ran my 2x2GB sticks of D9 at 1333 and 9-9-9-24 or 1066 and 7-7-7-21 to work properly. This memory page was last updated July '08.

Re: Intel DP45SG (Skyburg)

Fixed the restart problem by re-installing the latest BIOS (0083.)

Also new word on IDCC for DP45SG.

Intel® Desktop Control Center

"The current BIOS release for Intel Desktop Board DP45SG does not support the Intel Desktop Control Center. A new version of the Intel Desktop Control Center will be posted here when a compatible BIOS becomes available."

Sounds like Intel has a new IDCC ready but will not post it until a new DP45SG BIOS is ready. Both should be out shortly.

My new build is running great BTW, no problems ATT. Also audio sounds excellent.

Re: Intel DP45SG (Skyburg)

How the DP45SG stacks up against the DX48BT2.

Intel® Product Comparison Chart

Newer PHY (Ethernet), Newer audio CODEC, eSATA, newer chipset (65nm), $90 cheaper. The DP45SG will also run CrossFire (2x8) but doesn't support 1600 FSB (officially.)

I contacted Intel (response below) and they appear to be leaving the door open for 16 MB memory support with a future BIOS release, although I am not sure of the likelihood of this happening.
"Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.

We confirm the Intel(R) Desktop Board DP45SG supports up to 8 GB. (when utilizing 1 Gb. or 2 Gb. technology). Please, refer to the following URL for more details:

[I can't include this URL as I am a new member, but it is the same one listed above]

Unfortunately, as a general corporate policy, the technical support staff does not comment on unannounced Intel(R) products nor future technologies on software or hardware. This also includes unreleased BIOS versions that might make the board support 16 GB. of RAM."

Excuse the newbie question. but what is a "402"?

Also, is DDR3 RAM (which this board requires) really worth the incremental cost over DDR2? That is, what type of system configurations or applications are likely to benefit from using this DDR3-based boards?

Re: Intel DP45SG (Skyburg)

Hi,

Got this board last week and I have a few issues. Maybe someone can help?
My setup is as follow:

DP45SG
Q9450
Patriot 2x2gig 1333 7-7-7-20 1.7v (PVS34G1333LLK)
ATI 4870

1st, I know my mem is XMP compliant, board is supposed to support XMP (p45 chipset), but mem is detected as 1066. I managed to post at 1333 but with looser timings, which bothers me...

Then, I installed Vista 64 bit (with default bios setings) , and got major issues with stability in Vista. Drivers would not install, installer would crash etc...

I installed XP 32 bit, system was very fast and no issues... Got latest drivers from Intel, flashed to latest BIOS.

Now after this, the network card doesnt work anymore. Still detected in Windows, drivers installed, but cannot get a DHCP address. If I use a static address, I cannot ping gateway (I have another computer in same room, and using the same cable, it works fine). Diagnostics from network card driver fails "loopback test". Since then, I tried getting lan to work with xp 32, vista 64 and even server 2008 64 bit without success... Think I should RMA?

Thanks

Re: Intel DP45SG (Skyburg)

update: I managed to have some connectivity by forcing 10meg full on network card. Putting to anything else (auto-detect) results in no connectivity at all...

This is very strange since another PC works fine on same cable...

10 meg full sucks btw and download spped is crippled atm

402 I was referring to is the last part of the board AA number. The last part denotes the board revision. The BOXDP45SG AA no. is E27733 -401 originally. If you look closely at one of the board pics at NE you can see the AA no. on the board above the memory slots. It is 402 already. I have not read any PCN's from Intel yet on this board but I would bet going from 401 to 402 is only a BIOS change.

Excellent question on DDR3, you can Google this to find DDR2 vs. DDR3 articles and reviews. DDR3 has a better design in regards to signal bussing and it can handle higher frequency with lower voltage. System tests between DDR2 and DDR3 systems performing common benchmarks (some synthetic) show neck and neck performance between the two. Another note: Nehalem boards will all be DDR3 from what I've read so you might take this into consideration.

The board is very new and green right now. It most likely needs some BIOS updates to clean it up a bit. I have 1600 7-7-7-21/1.8V Super Talent which only works at 1333-9-9-9-24/1.9V or 1066-7-7-7-21/1.8V reliably. Intel tech. support says what ever your memory comes up detected as is how you should run it which is probably how you should leave it for the time being. Mine comes up 1333-9-9-9-24.

I had trouble getting the network connection going myself. I know this board is new so my address changed. I believe I got it working by reinstalling the LAN drivers and rebooting.

Re: Intel DP45SG (Skyburg)

Hi everyone, I have been looking at this board for my next system and following this thread closely. The parts I’m looking for match very closely to what cactus posted. Please keep the comments and findings coming, and thanks posting your thoughts.
