Might want to do a search of Abxzone. Or look in the controller
forum for ahci not achi. This has been discussed here several times.

Might want to look at this forum. one of the posters got ACHi to work without a reinstall

in vista you have to change a registry setting, then install the microsoft AHCI driver. reboot, change to AHCI and you're good to go.

Not sure about XP though.

I tried this in Xp a while ago. There is a registry setting; although I dont recall what it was. I found that performance and stability was impacted; in other words the setting just didnt work as advertised. I think the advice from M$ for Xp is that you have to re-install.

[edit] Here it is but just remember I DONT recommend this:
  1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
  2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
  4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
  6. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

That's not surprising, windows has had a poor relationship with AHCI for quite some time. Definitely a +1 for linux, I switched my bios to AHCI with my ubuntu installation and it didn't care. Alas, Ubuntu just doesn't have the sexy that Win7 does right now.
