New Build: Asus X48 Rampage Formula

No more waiting. The building begins now.

An Asus X48 DDR3 Rampage Extreme with the eSATA ports and the new on-board X-Fi card would have been nice, but .... I don't want to wait any longer and the price for DDR3 isn't dropping the way I wish it was.

So .... On to the next build!!!!!!!

Motherboard: Asus X48 DDR2 Rampage Formula
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield
CPU fan: Zalman CNPS 8700 NT 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
Thermal paste: Arctic Silver Ceramique
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2 8500
Video card: VisionTek Radeon HD3870X2 Overclocked Edition
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro 7.1
Hard drives: Two Western Digital Caviar RE2 WD5001ABYS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives
Optical drive: Samsung 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black PATA Model SH-S202N
Floppy drive: Samsung Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive
Case: Lian Li 343B
PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Crossfire Edition
Fans: Yate Loon 120mm fans, Cooljag Custom LED 120mm fan, Cooljag Custom LED 80mm fans, Bluegears B-Cool Temp Reading 120mm fan

Comments are welcome.

I hope the Q9450 works out with the OCZ Reaper RAM. I always wanted to run OCZ Reaper RAM. If they work, I'll get 4 gigs more. I will need 8 gigs to run win98se 64 bit edition.

A Velociraptor is under consideration. Maybe later.

Re: New Build: Asus X48 Rampage Formula

Awesome looking system traveler, congrats! ...

I will start my own new build in the next few days... just trying to decide on the vid card, whether to pick up a GX2 now or wait for 4870x2 ...

i'm probably going to go for an E8500 CPU rather than a quad...

great looking case, Lian Li all the way!...

and good choice on the HSF!

what about the monitor?

That card I found out, in the Asus X48 DDR3 Rampage Extreme you mention isn't a true X-Fi card at all. It uses the new ADI 2000b chip, and does EAX HD 4.0, as apparently Analog Device apparently got a license from Creative Labs for EAX HD 4.0.

I say go for the parts you have chosen.

Thanks zapionics.

The video card had me going too. I decided that the 3870X2 will run everything out there today. So I went with it. OCed for a little more edge. I'll upgrade to a 4870X2 "many" months from now well after it comes out and never miss it. By that time "they" will have ironed out any bugs in the drivers for it hopefully.

I've read too many articles where the quad core did help out. It may not help out with any one program, but since when does windows run any one program ever now. So I'll try it and see.

Thanks about the HSF. I don't like monster CPU cooling devices. I'd rather water cool at that point.

Will be continuing to use the Samsung Syncmaster 215TW 21" Wide Screen LCD monitor.

Finally I'll be able to run Crysis!!!

Hiya trav!

The 3870X2 consumes a lot of power! The 4850 is faster, and consumes less power. Here's a good read ...

Looks like you're gonna have a folding monster on your hands!

Thanks for the update on the Rampage Extreme on-board sound ATINUT.

Thanks for the link sammy.

It was a tough call between the 3870X2 and the 4850. That's why I went for the OCed version of the 3870X2. I have the Vantec Slotcooler to help cool the OCed card. ( link to slot cooler ) Need the card now for the build. All parts have arrived and are here waiting for assembly. Now if the 4870 was out, I would have went for it. But now I can sit back and wait for the dozen or two versions of the 4870X2 to come out.

Make sure you have plenty of fans in you case. The fans will help keep your system, and the 3870X2 cool.

This is the second good video review I've seen from this Rodney fellow. I might have to start visiting his site.
