yes, if there is no device on primary slave, set to none. It was explained to me(it did reduce my boot time noticeibly) that XP during boot "looks" for devices on the IDE channels. When doing so, XP gives EACH device that may be there a few seconds to initialize and identify itself. If there is no device there, and you tell XP there is no device there, it wont "look" for a device on that specific channel, hence no lost waiting for a device to that is not there to initalize. Hope that makes sense.
Like I said, it worked for me. I found this trick on some website with tons of XP tweak tips.

Talking Another Satisfied Customer

Just finished building the new box. Followed the guide to the letter. Wonderful!!! Everything working just right.

Thanks to Mr. Steveo and the rest!!

Only problem now is connecting Altec Lansing 251 speakers to Audigy 2 sound card. I'll look for another thread/forum for that but if anybody knows - which color (green, yellow, black) plug goes to which output (front, rear, center/subwoofer)?

Speakers

No, not color coded at all! The diagram in the installation guide labels them so I know which is which. But the speaker installation guide only uses the colors.

Thanks for the help!!

Announcement:

An Error To Watch Out For iknernel.exe:

When installing software or drivers in Windows XP you may see an error pop up on the screen mentioning a reference to a file called ikernel.exe. Only a small percentage of people have reported this error, so what we are looking at is not a problems that affects vast numbers of computers.

So far the following software has been reported tp create the error:

- Drivers for Aduigy and AUdigy 2 sound cards

- The Sun Java Client

- Encarta Encyclopedia

There are likely more. But these are the most common occurances Ive heard about online.
===============================

The Fix:

The error occurs because of a possible problem with a recently released Windows Critical Update. The Critical Update is Q328310 / MS02-071 (MS Link Here )

If you have expereinced these errors or are concerned you may expereince these errors, then go into the Add /remove Prgrams section of your Control Panel and uninstall "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q328310" You can then go to WIndows Update and re-download and install the Critical Update once you are done installing software.

This is definitely a bit awkward, but as of now is the only fix I have found. Hopefully Microsoft will fix this in a future update.

Mr Steveo I have a question about the Radeon install procedure(s). Why do you recommend that the driver and the control panel be installed without a restart in between the two?

Being new to ATI (former GF4 Ti4600) I am attempting to understand the intricacies of Radeon ownership.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Again, your hard work on the install guide is very appreciated!

A limited but significant number of people at rage3d reported months ago that installing the drivers, rebooting, then installing the control panel caused problems. In these instances they experinced either problems with the drivers or problems with the SMARTGART service or both.

Since installing both modules without rebooting remedied those problems, and since installing both without rebooting has no negative consequences; i chose to use that as the preferred method for this Guide.

Thanks for the step by step installation which i will print soon,my question is what about if you want to install the O/S in your SATA drive can that be done? If so which way to do it.I pressed F6 when the installation was starting and it asked me for a floppy to install the drivers for the raid so i done that. But after pressing F8 and when the choice to where you want to install the O/S came up i could not see my SATA drive.Sorry if this question is somewhere else but i did not see it .Thanks

el__dude.

You might want to ask that question in the main forum. My gut guess is you havent set something up properly per the SATA BIOS. But Im not certain since I havent played with SATA yet.

brschmid

Yes I know, that KB article doesnt look like it is related to anything concerning Installshield or ikernel.exe. But according to a few MS employees and MVPs, removing this Hotfix eliminates the ikernel.exe error messages. Weird.
