IT should work jsut fine. USB2.0 cables are pretty much the same as 1.0/1.1 The only difference being as the 2.0 cables are certified as shielded well enough to handle the higher transfer rates of USB2.0.

In many cases you may find that 1.1 cables will work fine with 2.0 devcies since most quality 1.1 cables are shileded well enough as it is.

But remember, just using a USB2.0 cable wont make your device operate any faster than its rated. If your device doesnt have the High Speed USB2.0 logo on the literature, then a better cable isnt going to help.

thanks MR steve

what i have now is Lian Li casing where it has 4 pin outs 1.1 USB version jacks, but my motherboard has couple more of USB 2.0 version without the header and what i am going to do is to plug them into the USB 1.1 ports on my Lian Li case

as that is the case, will the USB ports on my Lian Li case work as USB 2.0 or 1.1 version as it comes as default?

cheers mate

They may work, they may not. There is really no way to predict. For example, there is a list of computer cases on Intels website that show as approved or not apporved for USB2.0 wiring specs. Unfortunately I didnt bookmark it to give you a link right now. But according to Intels chart, my computer case wiring should not work at USB2.0. But it does, as far as I can tell.

What I would suggest is to carefully follow a wiring diagram to match the wires on the Lian to the pins on the P4PE. Feel free to use the link in my siggy to help ya out. Then once you are hooked up, test a USB2.0 device and see if it works. Thats the onlyw ay to know for sure.

I would still like some clarification from someone as to the benefit or non-benefit of using the "Intel Application Accelerator" if I am using a Non-HP CPU. Should I install this program or not?

I used it once for about 3 minutes, because that is how long it lengthened my boot time.

Mr Steveo-

What is your suggestion on how to fix the XP refresh rate bug that causes games to be run at 60 and 70hz under Open GL and Direct X, respectively? I understand there are several work-arounds out there, but was curious as to what you thought was a good fix. I'm running an ATI 9700 pro, if that makes any difference.

Also, what benchmarks do you suggest for testing the hard drive and it's performance.

Thanks

Have you tried either the refresh rate tool from www.rage3d.com? For D3D you can also set the refresh rate from the ATI control panel...but..YMMV. Also the easiest way is just to edit the games IbI file if a given game has one. Doing this you can set custom refresh rates for a given game. THis is only possible with some games.

Id start with the refresh tool from rage3d and see hwo that works for ya.

I can only echo others AB members comments on how good this guide is.

I am having a few problems with a USB ADSL modem falling over every so often (need to de-install then re-install drivers and all in fine again) so hopefully a revised install will remedy the problem.

A quick question on partitioning - I use Partitionmagic for most of my HD partitioning. Can I use this to create partitions on the primary drive, or should I always use XP (Pro)? Waht about after the initial install?

On the USB cable thing, I understand that USB2.0 cables work for USB1.1, but not the other way round. Apart from the shileding, I seem to recall that USB2.0 cables are rated for the higher power requirements of USB2.0 devices. If this is the case then a USB1.1 cable may not have the power handling characteristics. I am currently using a USB2.0 cable with a USB1.1 photo printer with no probs, so I know it works one way round!

You can use Partitionmagic. I installed XP Pro on my Raid 160G drive, then used Magic to make two partitions with no problems.

Thanks for that. Clears up one thought. Now then, here's another one.

Driver updates.

After setting up the system according to the guide, everything will have been undertaken in a specific order. Now, let's say you want to update video drivers (say NVidia from 41.xx to the new 43.00). This seems pretty easy and likley to cause little trouble because they were at the end of the installation "chain" (but could they still effect the sound card drivers?). What about something earlier in the chain, say if a new service pack comes out with revised USB drivers? Do you need to roll back the install and start from scratch? Or can you just use the service pack and update at the end? Should I Ghost at various points on the basis that certain critical points may be updated in the future, or is this just a waste of time on my part?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Viking

Viking.

Its one of those areas where different people get different results. Usually its best to uninstall all traces of old video drivers before installing new ones. And as for "lower in the chain" like mobo drivers, you can always boot into safe mode and use the command line parameter " -A -A -OVER ALL"

As for Service Packs, sometimes you can get good results installing them after the fact. Sometimes not. But since they only come out once or twice a year, a clean OS reinstall 2x/year isnt all that bad.

Some peolel will tell you stories of how they installed new video drivers over old ones, or how they installed INF drivers from desktop over old ones. But even though some people can get it to work, its not really optimal.

Just decide for yourself what method is best for you when the time comes to upgrade your software..

USB ports

Heh Steveo,

Did you get a chance to look at my earlier post with the specifics of my USB ports? I didn't have the USB ports enabled until after everything was installed. I haven't had the need to use one yet, but it is only a matter of time. All seems to be working great.
