ANNOUNCEMENT

Update to the Guide

Recently a security patch was issued by Microsoft that can slow down the performance and responsivenes of your computer. This is a patch that was available on Windows update last week.

Please accept my aplogies for not bringing this matter to y'alls attention earlier. I struggled with deciding when was the best time to post information on this matter. In the end I decided to take a few days to see how successful people in various forums have been at uninstalling this patch. As of now, after a number of days, only a small handful of people have had problems uninstalling. So while not 100% guranteed to be a trouble free uninstall, most people probably will be fine.

For more details, links to documents, and steps to uninstall the patch; please go to the first page of this thread and scroll down to the Update Page. Its the first post after the Guide itself.

Have a great day!

To the writer of this Guide.....

Good guide....
It's good to know that there are people out there who care enough about other people to take the time to do something like that, as it can be frustrating for a beginner. Like myself. :-)
Anyways, I was wondering if you had any information at all as far as the installation procedure for Intel E7205 drivers, Asus P4G8X Deluxe, Ati Radeon 9700 Pro, and Windows ME?
Here is my problem,
If I install the Intel Drivers after a fresh windows install , I cannot get any games (or anything else for that matter) to work stable.
If I install everything without the Intel drivers everything works just fine....except that no AGP memory can be detected. All the games I play work just fine with some tweakng (Unreal 2, Soldier of Fortune 2)....But I have problems using the AGP 8x ......which I believe is because I don't have the Intel drivers installed. Perhaps I am bieng to picky, as I can get my my system to work very well....it's just that I paid a good deal of money for this stuff and I'd like to ge it to work to it's full potential. As i said I am new to all this...and after man unsucessfull attempts I have scoured the internet to look for a solution, or at least some documentation. And so far you are the best I have found. So any advise would help.

I must also say that I have the freedom to muck around with my Windows Installation, due to the fact that I dual boot with Red Hat 9. By simply tar-ing up my Windoze partition I can un tar it at anytime back to any configuration I had previously saved off.

So perhaps between all of us we can make a definitive guide on installing Intel Drivers on Windowes 9x.....just like the one for XP.
:-)

Hope to hear from you soon.

I believe there are problems running that motherboard and the 9700 Pro at 8X. These are KNOWN issues that WONT be fixed. Try running it at 4X and all should be ok. There is NOT any performance gain using AGP 8X over AGP 4X in todays games.

I have read the Intel docs on the subject of the E7205 chipset....and there are some problems that they are not going to fix. There are workarounds for them, although I am not sure if I understand what they are saying. Other people who own the same rig as I do have had problems similar (and far worse than mine) and have gotten there system to run the way it was intended to. AGP 8x and all....my prob lies in the drivers and/or driver installation process. I can't seem to get my system to funciton properly with them installed. windoze starts crashing all kinds of Blue Screen of Death.....in random wierd spots, like trying to access the Control Panel....gives several wierd, generic, cryptic errors.
I am installing them before anything else, after a fresh windoze install...still to no avail. As I was reading the guide I found here, it noted that after a fresh installation one should download some updates before continuing to install the Intel Chipset drivers. I guess what I am wondering is that if there are particular updates I should install for windoze 9x? In any particular order? Are there any known issues to Intel drivers?

I believe that my AGP 8X works just fine without the Intel drivers....as all my settings and BIOS indicate so. But then again I am new to all this. And as far as just using AGP 4X, I bought this board for the 8X and although no games now utilize it.....the games I plan to play in the near future will (Doom 3)...and it is not unreasonable for me to expect that I get what I paid for. So if it is impossible to make this work I want to swap my board for something else while I still can.

Thanks for the reply!

Please help - found guide too late

I have installed XP Prof on my P4C800. After that I installed latest INF-Driver, the USB driver!!!!, Lan-Driver,ATA Driver ---> all the latest from asus download side. Installed latest NVIDA driver, sound driver, printer driver, scanner driver
Then I installed a lot of apps, because I had to do some work.
After that I applied SP1-->rebooting-->XP login screen comes up-->mouse doesn't work anymore-->logged in-->machine didn't respond after a view seconds.

I put the XP-Cd in the driver-->selected install-->selected repair--> computer works. but I have to apply SP1.

Maybe it locks because of the wrong USB drivers. Is there a way to get rid of the probs without reinstalling?????

You can try using System Restore to roll back to before you isntalled the USB drivers, but thats no guarantee things will be OK

Note that The Guide talks about USB and XP. All the USB drivers you need are included in WIndows XP Service Pack 1. Using QFE fixes or other drivers may result in USb problems.

If rolling back to before you installed the USB drivers doesnt help, you may need to do a repair or reinstall of the OS.

Another thank you to Mr. Steveo for the great guide -
Would you please explain the following questions

I purchased a P4T533 Motherboard bundle - tested and burned in for 72 hours

I recently installed a dual boot XP PRO / XP HOME w/ service pack 1 -- (system has 3 SCSI HDs w/a 39160 controller
I am guessing that all the Motherboard drivers have been installed but I do have a disc that came with the system

1. in your guide step 2 - (install chipset drivers) what are the chipset drivers for? I know drivers are used for cards etc - how often does ASUS chg chipset drivers if no bugs are reported

2. I have a all-in-wonder - radeon (the one w/tv tuner) I use a 17in viewsonic monitor - I have not installed any video drivers for this card but I did install the 3 drivers that control the TV tuner - the TV part works great but when I record to the HD I cant not stop the recording without a reset (system locks up) I have checked ATI site and fourms and no answers so far I could not even find video drivers on the ATI site - any suggestion would be greatly appricated

thank you

Thanks Mr Steveo!!!!

I have just purchased a P4PE and will be following your guide.

Just one question though:

How come you have no IAA software installed?

Cheers,
Aussie.

As far as recent Intel boards are concerned, chipset drivers actually are not "drivers" per se, even though we have all gotten used to calling them drivers. They are called INFs, INF drivers, chipset drivers, etc in forums just as colloquialisms.

For Intel techncially the INF software is chipset identification files and registry additions. Their reason for being used is so that the operating system, drivers, and PCI/AGP cards properly recognize your motherboard and its components. Without installing the iNF software you run the risk of your system not being configured optimally which can result in reduced stability or performance

As for your situation #2, I do not fully understand. I cant see how you are using certain features of your video card with no video drivers installed. All i can recommend to you is to follow the procedure for ATI AIW card driver/software installation listed in The Guide at the beginning of this thread.

===================

Aussieland.

The goal of this Guide was to provide a beginning template for all people with Intel chipset boards to have an end result of a stable system. Since a significant number of people report troubles when IAA software is installed, I did not feel comfortable recommending it in a Guide tailored for all Intel chipset customers.

If with your particular configuration you have had good luck with IAA, or if you just want to experiment with IAA; feel free to install it. Keep an eye out for problems with CD burning time and quialty. Also keep an eye out for longer times entering hibernation, and problems with rebooting after high CPU intensive tasks in systems with WD JB hard drives.

If you do not experience any of the above problems, or if you are not bothered by them should they exist, then IAA may be a good choice for your system.

Again, as of now IAA is something I can only recommend each person try and decide for themselves.

Actually I had two bad experiences with an xp install (twice -same computer - Aopen AX4T mobo) after intalling IAA. After installing IAA and rebooting, the drive seemed to get corrupted files and got the BSOD. There was no recovery (not even the repair option from the XP CD would help)asides from reformatting and reinstalling. That's why I stuck my ears up when I saw your comment about not having IAA installed.

Thanks again for your most helpful comments.

Cheers,
Aussie.

Thx for your answers, but I decided to make a complete reinstall with format.

I installed exactly as described in this guide but windows xp fails right after installing directx9.0a.

I also removed my soundcard. There is nothing more in the machine, only the graphics device.

I can log into xp but sometimes the system halts (without bluescreen) right after logging in or sometimes if I have diskaccess.

my boot disk is a Hitachi (IBM) Deskstar 180GXP 180GB (07N9216) (IC35L180AVV207-1) with two partitions (80 GB and approx 100 GB), second disk is a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 80GB (ST380021A).

On the promise controller are two Hitachi (IBM) Deskstar 60GXP 41.1GB (IC35L040AVER07) attached but no raid configured. Therefor I use the SATA drivers privided on ASUS website.

I really don't know what to do. I also checked my bootdisk for disk errors--> no result.

Please help. Need the machine two work.
