sweet... thanks... now the questions

this is all the the ati driver update seciton:

1. is MMC, microsoft management console?

2. after installing the new drivers and control panel, you say: "- Now reboot into normal mode, when at desktop, follow onscreen instructions - "... what onscreen instructions? its all done after this step, right? i dont think im missing anything

3. "Reboot one more time when all done so as to properly engage SMARTGART.
- Once back at the desktop, open the advanced properties for your display and click on the SMARTGART tab. Move the slider around and then return it to its original position. Click apply. Reboot when prompted. (This step seems to solve problem for people with slow 2d performance.)
... is this rebooting one more time thing for people with the 9800 or all of us? and, how would i know if i was getting poor 2D performance... maybe like dragging an open window in photoshop ( or anything ) and having it skip and stagger over instead of move smoothly as i drag?

sorry for the huge amount of questions... im a little lost on those points tho.

TIA

1. MMC is MultiMedia Center
It is "ATI’s award winning PC based entertainment suite of applications. Included are:

* EAZYLOOK™ - ATI’s remote control user interface for the TV, DVD, File Players and Multimedia Center Library applications.
* TV Player – for integrated TV playback on a PC (requires an ALL-IN-WONDER® or TV WONDER™ card)
* DVD Player – Fully featured DVD playback
* VCD Player – for playback of authored or created VCDs
* CD Player – Integrated with online database to provide Title / Artist info
* File Player – Provides playback of many standard captured file formats
* MMC Library – Manage and maintain multimedia content easily."
(according to ATI)

2. As you install there should be instructions on your screen.

looks like MMC is for AIW and VIVO/TV cards and "built by radeon" cards... mine is a sapphire pro. i took a look in device manager and the card properties say the manufacturer is ati technologies... is that "built by ati"?

It includes the driver, control panel, and WDM caprture driver (for AIW/VIVO cards) all in one download that works as a "click once" installer.

During the first 24 hours Cat 3.7 was posted the separate downloads had a bug due to a mislink to a multi language pack. That was corrected by ATI and now its safe to either use the full Catalyst download or the separate downloads; whichever you prefer.

Rumor has it that Saphire makes the vid cards for ATI some weeks and some weeeks ATI makes them for Saphire, so technically, "Yes"

However as far as MMC licensing goes, MMC will sniff out your part number as a Saphire and probably will not let you install MMC.

As for thoughts on the quality of MMC, Im the wrong guy to ask I have a Built by ATI card and oddly Ive never had any desire to install the MMC software. PowerDVD is working great for me and fits how I use my system. If youre looking for lots of opinions on MMC and need any troubleshooting help, Id recommend either the Graphics forum here at ABXZone or the forums at www.rage3d.com

Well Ill be a monkeys step sister! From all the official posters over at rage3d, the word for months has been you need a BBA card to have qualified for the MMC license. If you got it working on a Sapphire thats pretty cool indeed!

For the adventurous:

Intel released a new version of the IAA_RAID drivers yesterday (v43.5.2) They are not, however, WHQL certified.

HELP! RAID install

I just powered the rig (see my sig) for the first time and Yeaaaa! it seems to run fine. I need help installing the RAID however. I am using the on board SATA (not Promise) RAID. I have the driver on a CD and I also downloaded the latest one from Intel. When the Windoes installer starts I hit F6 and the screen asks me if I have a driver and then it asks me to insert the driver in drive A; So, how do I get a 1.8 meg driver on a 1.44 floppy?
I tried to copy the driver to two floppy disks but it could not do that. I have tried burning the driver into a CD, iI have tried inserting the Asus CD I have.... well I have tried lots of things. What am I missing?

You dont sound like a Dummy. Intel is sort of the dummie for not offering floppy vs. full from the interactive install menu.

Heres the scoop.
-------------------------------------------

Method 1
Click on the readme.txt file that was on the same webpage from which you downloaded the driver. The readme file gives directions on how to extract the IAA files. Then it tells you which files to copy to a floppy disk.

Method 2
Or if you are ok with the v3.5.0.2600 driver (my favorite so far ), you can download a ready made floppy version of the IAA drivers. You just click on the download and pop in a floppy and youre done. This version can be found on the support page at Intel for their Canterwood board. Heres the link: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bz/bz_drive.htm

Under Windows XP drivers you will see a driver called "SATA RAID: F6 Driver Disk (Optional)." Thats the one you want.

Again if you want a different version of the driver, follow the extraction and floppy creation instructions from the readme file.

=============================================

P.S. That should also solve the problem from your second post once you get the RAID drivers loaded properly. Post back if you run into any snags.

Thanks MagnumR6Vet,
Yes I am running and in fact am using the new rig right now. I was off line for a day while I was happily configuring and then loading Apps. I fought the problem for hours and finally called Asus. I think Asus should have supplied the floppy however I was extracting it correctly. Asus confirmed that I was doing everything right but made a key comment which was "have you tested your floppy drive to be sure it is reading correctly". VOILA!!, I tried a boot disk and it did not read so I checked the drive and found a cable issue with the fancy round cable I was using. Remember, this was a totally new rig so nothing had been tested. Except for the floppy all other componnents are doing their thing OK. All is fine now. I installed WIn Xp Pro which formatted the two Raptors in RAID 0 and installed Xp in about 20 minutes total. Except for a minor issue getting Ipconfig to release so I could see my router (solved by a full router and switch reboot) all is well so far. This rig screams and I have not even tried to OC yet.
Tell me how to post a picture here and I will do so. Do I have to post it on my web site and then link to it?
I may call you anyway just to say thanks and chat.
Thanks for the follow up.

Mr Steveo, thanks to you also. I read your install guide thread extensivly. I feel that it helped me avoid a number of pitfalls when doing final assembly and start up.
This is a great forum.
