Try this:

Download this driver
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...1&DwnldID=4233

Before you install it go to C:\ and look for a folder called IntelPro. If you see it delete it.

Next shut down your computer and remove any PCI cards you have installed for now. Also unplug your network cable from the computer.

Now boot up the computer and double click the downloaded EXE driver file and sit back and wait while it does its thing.

-------------------------------------------

If this doesnt help you may very well have a hardware problem. But give the above method a try first and post back please with your findings.

that worked a bit better steveo- at least it didn't hang this time.

i went and followed your instructions and it seemed as if the drivers loaded but i get a message at the taskbar on the bottom right saying that the driver wasn't installed properly and it may or may not work.

in the device manager- i see that the Intel Pro 1000 CT Network Connection is now marked with red and disabled. i enable the deviceand click on propertiesand the message box reads: reinstall the drivers for this device (code 18)

to reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall.

when i re-boot, windows reports that it has found a new device but the NIC is sill not working and it says that " a problem occoured during hardware installation, there may be a problem with the device, it may not work properly"

that has gotten me father than i have been before- at least i don't get the "hang" problem i was having before.

one interesting thing that happens when i installed the driver, is that in the taskbar on the bottom right, as i click on the exe for installing these new drivers, i saw it flash "new hardware found Intel Pro/1000CT Connection #2" first and then it quickly changes to "found new hardware Intel Pro/1000CT Connection #1" as if it is detecting 2 different controllers.

in my device manager, the connection # is number 2. why would there be 2 different connections available?

thanks again for your help.

You can also try the Minimum Download version.

i think there may be a problem with the mobo. i just got through re-formating the c-drive and following the windows xp installation guide to the t (there were a few steps that i trampled over last install) and sure enough, when i got to step 24, installing the LAN drivers, it hung while installing.

even though it doesn't act like a hardware problem i think there are no other options but to rma the board and hope for the best. a friend has said that it smells much more of a OS-driver-settings conflict and i tend to agree, but asus customer support is a bit on the lean side. the one time i was actually able to speak to some one, he said he had to go after 5 minutes because that's all he was supposed to stay on the line with each customer
it didn't matter anyway- i felt like i was teaching him how to try and solve this problem.

thanks again everyone for all your help and happy new year-

Good morning and Happy New Year redmist

Have you set the BIOS to default setting prier to installing the OS? only setting the USB to enable and disabling 'USB Legacy Support'

Are you using on-board sound? or a third party sound card? if you are using a third party sound card, (if so equiped) is the on-board sound disabled?

One other thing you can do, do a hard CMOS reset in way of pulling the battery out and waiting for 20sec before re-inserting the battery. If you do a hard CMOS reset, go back into BIOS and 'setting the USB to enable and disabling 'USB Legacy Support''

Hard set your PCI bus speed from automatically to 33/66
Make sure you have NOTHING plugged into the USB port when installing NIC driver or during the installation of the OS

I hate to see you go through the RMA hassle unnecessarily. We arn't trying to drive you insane, just wanted you to know that

i am using on-board sound and have no pci cards in the slots.

do you reccomend doing a hard-cmos reset and then re-installing the OS?

thanks for your advice-

thanks for your advice-
Lets start from scratch, a currupt BIOS may cause XP install problem
Do a hard reset of the BIOS (pull battery)
While the computer is off. Unplug all your drives
re-insert your battery
Fireup your computer
Once in BIOS, set to DEFAULT setting
Save settings and exit
After BIOS post, you will come to a prompt no drive/OS installed, turn off computer, wait 20sec.
Fireup your computer
Go into Bios
Set the PCI bus speed to 33/66 (not auto)
Enable USB
Disable USB Legacy Support
Keep NIC DISABLED for the mean time
Keep Sound disabled for the mean time
Save and exit
After BIOS post, you will come to a prompt no drive/OS installed, turn off computer
RECONNECT your drives, make sure cables are firmly in place
Fireup your computer
Install windows XP
Once XP is installed and that you have NO yellow explanation marks in the device manager.
Restart in BIOS
Enable the NIC (only)
Save and Exit
Allow it to go in to windows and see if the drivers install
If the drivers install correctly, set up your internet connection
Go to Windows UPDATE site and install all criticle updates and any recommended updates that may pertain to your system.
Install Video Card drivers

If all go's as planned, restart back in to BIOS and enable the Sound.

PnP set to 'DISABLE'

In Advanced Settings
it would be called: 'AGP/PCI Frequuency' set to [66.66/33.33]

i must be crazy but i've looked everywhere and can't find it in the advanced menu- could it be called something else on this board?

edit: i found it- i had to set the AI overclock tuner to manual befor it showed itself as an option.

Try this

Advanced;
Configure System Frequency/Voltage

Then look for 'AGP/PCI Frequency' and set to [66.66/33.33]

RMA time.

thanks very much for your help. i'll probably be back in a week with more problems when i get the new board.
