I think the reason he is having probs is due to some changes in the latest version of Intels INFs and how they handle USB in pre SP1 XP disk builds. Theres a few other easy suggestions for him before chuncking things and doing the USB after he has AOL and patches installed. But since he is new to building Id rather not confuse him by going into detail on these various other paths just yet.

| .........I thought he is saying the USB drivers are already loaded after SP1a and the only yellow question marks he sees are for video and ethernet. I have seen this , this week when reformatting. I used the newest Intel inf files and the USB was already loaded when I checked D.M..............

Upon re-read I can see your interpretation as well - that he finished step 21 and then ran into problems. Its also possible that he saw the other yellow exclamation points and tried to manually update those devices while in device manager rather than returning to the steps of the Guide and installing the drivers for those devices from EXE programs. Either way as you point out he will want to deal with the other devices later. Hopefully he can post back and indicate exactly where it is in the process he is currently stuck. BTW, thanks for the info on yoru recent reformatting and what you ran into with the INFs. May I ask what kind of XP CD you were using since plain XP disks respond differently to INFs than do XP disks with SP1 or SP1a included? Thanks.

| ......It's an old CD without SP1a.........I never seen that before and I formatted 4 computers since Jan 1st. 2 were AMD and 2 were Intel. Only the Intel with the newest inf files, 5.11.1002final, I didn't not have to load the USB drivers. The other 3 I did.......

| D875PBZLK and Xp w/SP1a Thanks for everyone's prompt replies. I'm stuck on step 21 "updating the USB drivers for proper functionality." "21. Now is when we want to update the USB drivers so that they are properly installed for USB2.0 functionality. To do this, click Start Button, then right click My Computer and choose Properties. Click the “Hardware” tab, then click the “Device Manager” button. On the tree in the Device Manager you should see a device with a yellow question mark over it called either “USB Controller”, “Serial Device”, or something of similar wording" When I get to this screen it says: "? Ethernet Controller" (Will not let me update it without being online, and I need AOL to get there) "? Video Controller" (VGA compatible) (I do not think this is what Mr. Steveo is talking about) Several lines below these I saw something interesting: "+ Universal Serial Bus Controller" If I click on this icon it says: "Intel (R) 82801 USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2" " " " " " " " - 24D4" " " " " " " " - 24D7" " " " " " " " - 24DE "Intel (R) 82801 USB2 Enthanced & universal Host Controller-24DD" "USB Root Hub" (Repeated five times) If I try to update any of these USB items it says the following: "The software cannot find a better match for your hardware than you have currently installed" However, if I go into the BIOS and enable USB Legacy support or disable it and try to test the mouse as a USB mouse it does not work. Therefore I assume that my USB ports are not automatically installed. I'm going to print and try Mr. Stevo's instructions that he posted a couple posts ago. Any additional input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Marc |

| I'm adding this post to list my system specs: Just click on my name to see my system specs. For some reason the signature is not working, either that or it will only work with a fresh post. Thanks again, Marc Last edited by Holartic; 01-13-2004 at 07:35 AM.. |

| Tried Mr Stevo's new instructions Hello, NOTE: I have not finished step 21! It would not let me update the "? Ethernet controller." Unless it was completed automatically without my knowledge. I only have two choices with a yellow "?" to choose from. I assume that I should update the device titled "? Ethernet Controller" rather than the "? Video Controller" Following Mr. STEVO's new instructions: After I choose "Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install" it has "Show all Devices" (Highlighted in blue). In this list, there is no button that says "Have Disk" BBThumper mentinoed downloading the LAN driver from my motherboard CD. Perhaps I should download the LAN driver from the CD that came with my D875PBZLK? Then download the Matrox P650 video card driver? Then update the USB2.0 drivers? I made a CD like Mr. STEVO said so I already have installed the Intel Chipset drivers and have DirectX9.0 on CD (not installed yet), as well as the Matrox P650 video drivers. I read that some people are having trouble with Matrox drivers so I even wondered if I should install them. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you should install the LAN drivers from your motherboard CD. Then download the Matrox P650 video card driver? Yes. No sure about Matrox video drivers, haven't owned one since the original millennium, but it should be a simple install. Then update the USB2.0 drivers? No need to, already installed.

You say you are stuck on step 21 when trying to mess with the USB, when actually you are done with step 21. Then youre trying to use step 21 to address later devices step 21 was not written to guide you through. This is understandable and I apologize if the Guide was confusing. In other words and to elaborate: Based on what you are seeing as listed in the quote above, your USB has been auto-updated properly. You may have a disk / config similar to BBTs, or you may in your trials ahve inadvertently updated the USB without knowing it. Where it seems you are getting confused is by seeing the NON-USB yellow exclamation points. Step 21 was not intended as instructions for updating your ethernet or video drivers. While it can be done, I would not recommend updating those devices through device maanger. For all intents and purposes, youre done with step 21. Youre ready to move on to the rest of the steps. These later steps will help you load the remainder of your drivers from the desktop.

| Thanks for the help w/ the USB drivers. I have some other questions. I was unable to find #3, 6, 7 and 9 in my bios. I #7 found a fan speed, but I did not see any reference to "red." "3. If you plan to use the power management state called “Suspend To RAM” it’s advisable to enable this feature in the BIOS before you install Windows." "6. Set “Boot Virus Protection” to Disabled. You can enable it later if you like, but this setting can cause problems with some installations and Virus Scanning software" "7. Go into the power section of your BIOS and if any fan RPM is in red, set to “ignore”" "9. Set “Speech POST Reporter” to Disabled It’s known for giving erroneous information" Does this mean my bios does not have these features or was I simply unable to locate them? The system I am working on is located in my signature. Thanks again.

| Thanks for the reply BBThumper. I have another question. If Iwere to run into a problem with XP and wanted to do a complete reinstall. What is the correct procedure? I assume that you go to the start menu, and then "run" and then type in "Format C." Then your basically just back to your bios? What do you do if you have to do a complete reinstall? Does doing a complete reinstall and reformat fragment your hardrive or compromise your components? Thanks again for the replies

| Since I do have AOL, and I will have to install the software to get online. Step 25 says to get online and install all non-windows updates. This is before you install the video card drivers. I will need to install AOL to get online. This messes up the order. Also I plan to add a sound card in the near future. Perhaps I should speed that up and get sound now? My motherboard does not have onboard sound. So in summary, should I put off the windows updates, then install the video drivers, then AOL then log online? Or should I just foget AOL entirely and get a new ISP? I'm a little apprehensive about getting AOL bloatware all over my NEW computer. What ISP do you recommend? Should I make do with AOL? Thanks for the input.

| .....try these, its a condensed verison: 1.WinXP 2.SP1a if it's not already on the CD 3.Chipset drivers 4.Lan driver 5.dx9b or what directx you want 6.Video card drivers 7.Sound drivers 8.Windows Update 9. Defrag .......anything after number 3 can be put in a different order if you need something else installed...these are only suggestions but 1-2-3 are the most important...... .....AOL=The devil momma says  ...........

For dialup ISP's Earthlink and ATTWorldnet usualyy come out on top of most user satisfaction surveys. Of course you'll hear individual horror stories but there's not too much you can do about that. I'm sure you can use Google to find some links to rankings of dialup ISPs too.
