Thanks gang!

I should be here off and on until I get the Guide updated. And as previously mentioned, I will subsequently pop in and update if theres something big that comes down the pipe from MS.

My goal with this sebatical of sorts is to get a better grasp on time management during busy weeks and months. As Im sure many of you know, its easy to log into the forum when you have ten free minutes and end up logged in and posting for thirty minutes. So while Ill be tied to my handy computer as always, Im really hoping to spend little to no time in various forums in order to get more real life stuff done.

Thanks for your support!

I agree with BBT, sounds like the RPC virus. If you are on broadband as you install your OS, consider purchasing a router or hardware firewall. If this is for a home system and youre on a limited budget, there are residential routers that can be had for very little money. And over time I think youll find having at least a router will pay for itself in time saved securing and mantaining your system.

If youre on dial up, you may want to do your install at a firends house who has a broadband connection with router, or change to a dial up ISP service that blocks the RPC ports on their service (many do.)

Im sorry to hear about your bad luck. I think we all have had an installation here or there that goes bad. It can be frustrating. Best wishes to you though that your next install goes better.

Welcome to ABXZone, and feel free to post back if you have any questions about setting up Windows.

=====================================

Thanks for being on top of things BBT!!!

(edit) My apologies for the plethora of typos. All fixed now

Definitly a virus, a friend just did a format and reinstall of the OS. Until he had his firewall up he contracted the virus (the third time he got the hint). Get rid of the virus and do a clean install then your firewall before logging on the net.

Are you talking software firewall? If so can you recommend which brand you are referring to? The reason I ask is that usually I wouldnt recommend installing a software firewall prior to Windows Updates and driver installation. If you know of a brand that dedinitely plays nice during WUs and driver installs that would help out a lot of people.

The above is also why I was recommending a router, ISP change, or hardware firewall. But it sounds like you may have a fourth option for folks!

.....I just thought I would pass on my experience with a virus on a fresh format. I started getting them the last 2 times I formatted. Then I would see it when I formatted a few friends computers . It turned out the virus with on one of my backup CD's I use with my programs on it. If you are finding viruses right after a clean install you might want to check your cd's that you use. Just my 2 cents.........

To those awaiting the updates to the Guide, my apologies. I had planned to have everything updated by yesterday / today at the latest. Unfortuantely Im running behind schedule as this busy week has required internet forum projects / testing to move lower on my priority list.

My current best guess on ETA of updates is Sunday eve. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Its an optical illusion. Kinda like the rear view mirror on your car. See the fine print at the bottom of your screen?

Hiya Ralf, Lilla, Cole!

================================

If anyone out there has either a Granite Bay (E7205) or an 850 RAMBUS chipset board and you are thinking of installing / reinstalling XP this weekend, please post a "Hello" in this thread. I could use your help verifying something.

Thanks.

Sorry about the slow response to the above query, I'm almost certain he was using zonealarm. I agree If you can have your updates and drivers on a CD (downloaded from a different PC) installed first you will be more likely to get a clean install. Just install the firewall before surfing.
