| Thanks for all the responses guys! Have you ever noticed volt and temp in bios DO NOT MATCH asus probe? I think I trust the bios more. Check it out. Go into bios check reading. Boot windows, check readings. |

| When you are in bios your cpu is actually under partial load(not sure why), so the temps are typically 4-5 degrees higher. Once you boot into your OS, your CPU settles into idle state.

| Hmmm... I have never seen my temps reach the temps that I see in the bios. Even running two instances of prime... If the cpu is under load, what is it doing? Generating ascii menus? No offense, but I don't think that is correct. |

| Sorry for the vague reply I first gave, I admit it wasn't very informative this: "The BIOS CPU state is not the lowest power CPU state; the CPU is in a basic level when the BIOS comes up, and not all the P4’s complicated power-saving features are yet enabled. Thus the BIOS temperature can be substantially higher than the steady-state idle temperature under Windows." and this: "The reading in the BIOS is the full load temperature, and, it seems to me, the only one which should be used as a standard for comparison. When an OS is in control it executes Halt instructions unless a process or thread is ready to run. The CPU goes into a temporary powered down state until an interrupt occurs (like from the real time clock) which at least initiates some kernel activity. The BIOS has nowhere near this level of sophistication, and just leaves the CPU in a loop waiting for console input. Various hardware monitors, running under the OS, report a so called "idle" temperature when nothing else is running. This reading is unrealistically low. (I went through 3 coolers trying to get my BIOS reported temperature down to what every one else was reporting). The problem with using this as a standard is that the "idle" condition can vary from machine to machine depending on the setup. The hardware configuration, amount of RAM, and (most importantly) which OS and background tasks are running, can all affect what percentage of time the CPU will spend in the halted state. In building up my software configuration, I was at one time getting "idle" readings around 28 deg C with only the bare OS installed. I thought my cooler was phenomenal until I went into the BIOS and saw 46 deg." Take it for what its worth. The information doesnt come from any kind of official sources so I have no way of verifying the truth of them, or even what exact hardware setups it refers to, but it does make some sense to me, and I think at least some of it applies to our situation. I also think that temp readings can vary greatly between different bioses and different boards

| Thanks for the update! That does help. I design cpu's for a living, and it could be true about the halts and stuff. But, I have to tell you I am still not sure if their reasoning is right. On the other hand, I can't see asus screwing up the temp/volt readings in bios vs. OS either. My voltage IS LOWER in bios, than in OS. Which is opposite of what I would think based on their statements... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... |

| When you are in the BIOS, there are no instructions to halt the CPU or throttle it, unlike when you are in Windows and ACPI is active. The temp you see in the BIOS *should* be the actual highest your CPU will go if there is no power management enabled. On the other hand, ASUS seems to have screwed up everything lately, as the last 3 boards I have purchased have been progressively worse. Regarding Vcore, have a look here: Vcore setting on P4C800E is a joke ![]()

| Hey all, i just got a P4C800-E to replace my old MSI 875P Neo LSR (wanted to do raptor RAID0), and i'm having some trouble overclocking it. I've got a P4 2.4C (SL6WF ) and 2x256 OCZ PC3500 EL. On my old MSI board i managed to overclock the FSB to 275 Mhz (CPU 3.3) which i think is a pretty decent overclock. My ram timings were 2,5-3-2-5, and with a 5:4 ratio ran at 220Mhz. I never tried anything above 275 since i was pretty happy with it, but i'm sure it could go a little higher. At 275 the system was very stable with only the odd crash once in a while. Since i've switched to the P4C800-E i haven't been able to reach that 275 Mhz mark I'm stuck at 264 Mhz, and no matter what i try i won't boot. I actually managed to POST ate 265 but it crashed with a "WAIT..." message and i had to short the jumper to reboot again Any ideas? | Chipset Roundup Motherboard Summary king_elves, This reviews benchmark results using a 2.4c showed a higher attainable FSB 280 with your MSI, compared to a lower 275 for your new P4C800 Deluxe. Both boards split the benchmarks, very similar results. In another week it will be interesting to me to listen to "your test run" summary compared to your MSI. You need to check out this 865/875 High Performance MotherBoard Comparative Benchmark Summary. | system ready but am I?? well I am interested in overclocking my computer: Pentium 3.0c 1gb Hyper-X DDR333 Kingston ram Asus P4C800 Deluxe (non -E) Stock Heatsink/Fan Full tower running 4 fans (2 rear exhaust, one top exhaust and, one side) I understand the FSB and clock timers thing but not the memory overclocking and voltage stuff back in the old days you just reset the clock multiplier until the system was stable and bam you were over clocked it seems things have changed from what I have been reading. My question is where do I start are there any good sites that explain what the settings do? is the stock HS good enough? how high can I crack this baby!! water cooling is out of the question but upgrading the HS/Fan is but so many to choose and I want to get the best bang for the buck. so what should I buy and what should I read Thanks
