Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi all,
I have been unable to get P-95 stable at anything above 3.3 or so. What I did notice was that I am only seeing 4 or my 6 GB Ram. I found that I can boot with one DIMM using two of the three but one will not boot. When I use just the two good ones I see 4 Gb but when I add the 3rd, the one that will not boot it does not add memory and I still only see 4 Gb. This is in the BIOS as well as Windows.
This is a suprise at I am using Corsair TR3x6G1866c7GT. COrsair is sending me new memory. It should be in on Thursday.
In the meantime I can not get into Windows with any OC at all now while only using the two good sticks.
Any thoughts?
I will keep you informed.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hey Dan, Welcome back

I read somewhere in the motherboard manual that the RIIE will NOT boot on just 1 stick of memory in the system. You have to have at least 2 sticks installed for it to boot.

I'm running my system at 4.0 24/7 now.
I ran prime 95 the entire weekend, and it was completely stable.
I wasn't very happy with the temps I'm getting but I can't do anything about that unless I go liquid now!

here's a screenie of my voltages at 4.0

As Sir Skully pointed out, (QPI/Dram Core Volts) need to be at least the same or just slightly higher then (CPU Volts)

I hope you get your memory issue straightened out and can get back to playing with your awsome setup again real soon, looking forward to seeing that 4.0 OC on air for you. and hope YOUR temps are better then mine are

I can post the other bios settings I am using for the above pics if you would like to see them for reference, just let me know and I'll get em all posted asap.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hey exc, nice 4gig oc....just wee high temps. I've been through 3 of these i7 920 cpu's. Its you either get a gooden or a baden. This one I'm on now is a gooden. As I type its @ 4200mhz oc, and OCCT stressed for 30 minutes so far. I just picked it up today. The first was a great oc'er as you know. The second one, all I could get was 3500mhz stable. So it shows these i7 920's are differeent from batch to batch. If ya had liquid cooling it woud help, as these i7's run hot. Anywho glad ya got a good oc.......

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi Exc,
I am back running with the two sticks that seem to be good. I should have the new kit in by Thursday. I am stable at 3,46 with Temps of 38 37 39 35
Yes, I would really like to see your settings.
One thing I did find out that my failure to boot into Windows last night was due to the Win 7 settings becomming corrupted, perhaps from the various locks and bsod'S I was getting. I did a repair and that seemed to settle things down. It is a Beta OS after all and I am not even running the latest build.
I am not playing much untill I get all three memory channels populated again but I have just about finished the cosmetic work (case wiring Etc).
Are you still running Air Cooling? My new Zalman 9900 is doing much better than the first one I had.
One question, when I run the sensor test (heat up and cool down using Prime 95) in Real Temp my multiplier reduces and slows down the CPU about half way through. I do have Hyp Threading enabled and C1E support disabled but I can not find Speedstep in this BIOS to disable it??
This BIOS is amazing but there are so many interdependent settings and sub menues that I am always finding something new.

Sorry to hear about the bad memory stick. Read my post above, not all i7 920's are great oc'ers. But maybe the bad memory was holdong you back. And sometimes it takes time to tweak in a good oc.

Hi SS, so did you fry the first one
I see that there are some Do stepping 920's out there now. Did you score one? That may mean that the 975 may be out soon!?!.

No, I wish I would of scored a DO stepping. I've been getting the C0/C1 steppings. Nary a fried cpu yet! 2 out of three of the C0/C1 stepping have been great oc'ers. This last one looks to be the best. here's a teaser screen shot.

Here's one I'm working on that looks promising. I also got a new multimeter. My old one was about 15 yrs old, and pooped out on me. I picked up a new Triplett 9000, here's a look see link....Triplett Test Instruments, Multimeters 9000 9005-A P/N: 9005 Portable use
Looks like a really nice digital multimeter.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

That is amazing. What do you do with the extra 920's?
I originally was going to wait for the 975 but with the 920 prices so low and no 975's in sight I went for it. I am not sure yet if this specific chip is holding me back but as soon and I get 3 good sticks of RAM I will know for sure. At least my temps are decient now (and my case looks great :-))

I sold and traded off the old cpu's, at a discount. This one is the last for me, and the i7 920. It really is oc'ing quite well. I think the more you play around with 920, you'll get a better feel for it. And get your new memory.

Thank You very much Sir Skully

A lot of my seccess is due to your hard work so I must

I do have, not so much a question as just bringing something to light.
I have noticed when useing the 21 multiplier that in Prime 95 (under Options - CPU) Prime is showing my cpu speed as 3817.96 (a 20 mulitplier) x 191.
Also when I run 3DMark 2006, the results page also shows the CPU speed as 3817.96.

any thoughts ?

You're welcome, PRIME95 doesn't read my speed right either. I had a 4400mhz and under cpu 95 it read 4200. I wouldn't worry much about it, As long as the bios screen, and CPU-Z has it right. Some software for oc stressing is just not that accurate. I'm glad you and Dan are around. If you guy's weren't here, this thread would have been much shorter. Me and my shadow can only interact for just so long.....
