Hey Dan, everything is fine running 1406 bios. If ya went and looked at my old screen shots, of temp and cpu-z. And if I took new ones, they'd look the same. I'm still @ 4.2gig oc and 1.38v. This is just a trouble free great oc'ing
cpu and mobo.

Hey SS, remind me again did you lap your 920? Mine is not that flat but then most CPU's are not. That is one area they could all improve IMHO.

No, no lapping. I buy my cpu's local with a 30 day return. If about 3/4 of the
cpu mates with the cooler/in my case water block. Then its a keeper, if not then I return it. Becase the uneven cpu heat spreaders, do make a big difference in temps.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

You know, that is a good idea. In this case I think I will go over to Micro center and bring a small straight edge with me.
I usually buy from NEw Egg but in this case perhaps some incomming Q C is required :-)
I am still undecided on the 920 or springing for the 975. I am thinking that with a D O 920 with a fairly flat spreaded I can get 3.8 24 7 on air as I am already getting 3.64 and with a 975 I might be able to squeeze out perhaps 4 or 4.2 on ait but is that worth the $750 more.

I think, in fact I'm sure. I'd be quite disappointed with a 975. Getting the oc I now get. I'd notice no or little improvement in speed of applications. That's why I went for the SSD 3X120gig RAID-O. The SSD's really let you see a big difference in load times/boot up, games. To answer your question, is it worth
$750 a resounding NO. You could use that money, for even one SSD. And see better results.

What OS are you running.
That 075 processor was the one I was waiting for but I got itchy to play so I picked up my CO stepping 920 and I have been very happy with it. I am running it at 3.64 stable at 100% load with air so you should have absolutly no problem. I will have to soon but another processor as I am going to help my nephew build his first DIY (reward for his 4.4 GPA this year) so I can either get a new 920 with the DO step or just get a 975 which was the original plan. I am still undecided.

SS I have read that the new 1406 BIOS does not retain your settings so I guess what you saw, having to manually input from scratch is normal. Any other issues? I assume you are still running at your amazingly fast speeds and low temps?

I haven’t had any problems with the X-Fi in the third PCI-E slot. I’m not crazy about the layout of this board as I would have liked to have had the X-Fi in the first PCI-E slot but the heatsink on the X58 chip blocks the card from being installed there.

So far I’ve loaded Vista 64/SP2, Windows 7 64-bit/RC and Windows XP Pro 64-bit Edition on the new setup and only problem I’ve had so far were with XP Pro 64-bit Edition and the new Nvidia 186.18 drivers. After about 15-25 minutes of game play the video would just drop out with a black screen and a “no signal” message on the monitor.

After checking into the problem at various hardware sites I found out I’m not the only one. I think the problem is with the way the memory on the card is being managed by the new 186.18 drivers. The problem for me only turned up when using XP, I’ve had no problems with these same drivers and Vista or Windows 7/RC.

I’m in the process of reinstalling XP Pro 64-bit Edition; this time using the 182.50’s to see what’s different.

As far as the 1406 BIOS “loosing settings”, I haven’t experienced that problem.

Thanks Dan an interesting find. But for me once I find the sweet spot, my ocing is pretty much over. Until the next new mobo/cpu. I'll look forward to
the 1501 bios. My rig is still @ 4200mhz..never have a problem. This has been one of my favorite setup's.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Yeah, I will not get the gadget either as I have the hardware on this rig finalized and besides, I like to OC using each individual setting in the BIOS. Still, it is interesting.
The new BIOS was good to know about as I will now wait for it before flashing.
I am going to get anothor 920 chip and see if I can push things further.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I hear ya, a DO chip would most likely put ya well up there.
There's just no use of me trying for a DO stepping. This chip does about as well as a DO. Just needs more juice. But 1.38v
is not bad for 4200mhz oc.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hey Dan, did ya ever get a DO stepping i7 920. I thought of it, but in all my reads on the net. A GREAT many Do's can't do what my CO can do. 42OOmhz and 1.38v is really dang good. I've notice also that some DO's have to push up the voltage after 4000mhz. My R2E is just one trouble free mobo, runs 24/7 with oc'ed cpu @ 4.2gig. But anywho was just wondering if ya got the DO i7 920.

Hi Skully,
You got me interested in getting a new system with a 920 but I think I am fooling myself running the 920 over clocked with a factory heat sink. I 've got the i7 975 heat sink with vapor chamber and I don't mind a little noise when gaming but what temp do you think I would idle at?

You might be right, I've read of new stepping Penryn's that aren't as efficient also video cards. Newer doesn't always mean better but Intel did say the D0 was to be a better OCer.

So how do I get my D0 up to 3.6-3.8GHz? I'll be getting it this Friday.

Hey bud, I have the CO stepping. Now all the 92O's are the DO stepping. The DO stepping's are much easier to oc even up to 4gig. With little to no increase
in voltage. High voltage is a heat maker. I think you could get a fair oc and good temps with that 975 cooler. But for me to guess your idle, would not work. As I'm running H2o.
Anywho its not so much idle temp that counts, but temps at load. I think you'd fair well with the new DO stepping....
