Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

You guys seem to be OK with temps @100% load being in the 70's. I was afraid to run that high. Do you feel that as long as the OC is stable that temps in the 70's are OK?

Yes, for this cpu/DO in the 70's is real good.
From what I read the DO runs hot and even in the 80's is fine.
Do i7 920 anything south of 90C is ok.....
I find the more juice/volts you apply to the i7 920 DO
really high temps scale right up with volts....
The highest oc with the lowest vcore voltage is the key,
to oc'ing the 920 DO.
The sweet spot on my DO is 4200mhz @ 1.28volts.
This DO I have is really no better then my 920 CO.
AS the CO ran 42OOMHZ @ 1.38V in the low 70's

SS, what temps are you getting with 100% load @ 1.28V with your D O?
At 1.28 my temps stert to reduce quite a bit from the 1.35V I started with. Anyway, I am going to get a tower cooler and install it later today so I can compare it to my 9900. I will choose one of them for the perminent install (as much as any of us ever make anything perminent). Then I will start to optimize.

I had a C0 shipped to me and sent it back for a D0 and from what I feel now I could have started a week earlier and used the C0. The D0 does have bug fixes to. The C0 may well have been the better chip. I have good luck buying new stuff when it first comes out. Intel didn't go to D0 to make it perform better then went to make the process better so they could make more. I bought a GTX 285 when it first came out and it OC's like mad. New ones are a different cheaper revision PCB and don't work as well.

Yes the DO most likely has some bug fixes. But the CO really preformed quite well for me, including a great 24/7 oc. So no real overt benefit for me and DO, perhaps a covert benefit not yet realized yet......

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Here's tidbit of an oc'ed 920 DO.
The speed step works while oc'ed.
But it reduces your benchie scores in 3Dmark Vantage...
I got a 58,000 score with speed step enabled'
And a 60,000 score with speed step disabled.....
See Vantage score below, I'm running CrossFire

Are these different findings from the CO? Do you still have your CO?

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

OK, I installed the CNPS 10 Extreme, (not an easy install but story for a different day). It did drop my temps a few degrees. At no load it gave me 40 (-3 from previous) 39 (-2 from previous) 41 (-4 from previous) and 36 (-2 from previous).
Under 100% load (stable) the temps are 71 71 70 68
All of the above are at 3.62 at at 1.22V
Based on what you are saying and on the results you are getting I think my temps are OK and as good as I am going to get on air. I still have my case open and with it closed my temps usually drop an additional degree.
So, now I will play with freq multi and voltage and see if I can get to 4.0 on air with temps in the mid 70's @ 100 load. If I can do that I will probibally drop down to 3.8 for normal use.
I do still have my CO chip. I would do some swaping except for the pain this cooler is to install. It does work well and looks great however.
Anyway, 10 PM now and an early start tomorrow on real work

Hey Dan.......
Yeah now into the good temps...
It reads like your getting better temps then me.
With your good cooling you should reach 4gig without a problem..
I just read a review on Hardware Secrets, I almost want to go out and
get one.....very nice cooler and gets the job done.......
Here's a linkie to the review...Zalman CNPS 10X Extreme CPU Cooler Review | Hardware Secrets

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

With this cooler I am able to get to 3.8 then 4.0 but to stay stable with 100% load I had to increase voltage to 1.32 and then 1.35 and of course my temps now go to the mid to high 70's under load with an occosional climb to low 80's.
I have a few questions. There is a voltage that should not be higher than my CPU V, it should be equal or less. I remember reading that and I will try to find it. Is that so and if so what is it?
Do you run CPU Q fan enabled or disabled?
