Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

HT...OFF
CPU Q fan disabled
Remember with the DO 920 lower Vcore= lower temps
High 70's low 80's @ load is fine with this chip
Dan here's the best info on the DO 920
Its the i7 white papers look at page 22...

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Thanks SS,
I still think I have some voltage tweaks to do. My temps are OK but you are OCing higher than I am and your temps are much lower. I know liquid cool is better but that much better??
Thanks for the white paper, I have downloaded it and I will read it carefully.

You're welcome Dan, yes water cooling is better. It dissipates heat much better then an air cooler. Also be aware of your room ambient temp.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Here's what heats up your 920 DO.
Its the on board memory controller...
To check run OCCT in CPU:OCCT Priority High mode
Then run OCCT: Limpack, with Limpack you'll see the heat climb....

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I've chased my cpu temps to the North Pole..
I upgraded my ole Swiftech block.
With one that Swiftech makes for the i7 chip.
Did it make a difference?...... O YEAH.....
10C+ cooler on OCCT Limpack with 90% of memory loaded.
Its the Apogee GT/Z water block......
I've included some pic's of the Apogee water bloch.
I also was going to put the N-bridge under water.
But the water block that I picked UP @ Computer store, doesn't work!
I'll have to order one off of the net.
Did the New Water block let me clock higher? yes!
But for 24/7 the 44gig oc stable, cost a payment of to high of voltage.
Also here are some benchies of new water block under load.
I new this water system had more cooling in it......

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I just ordered the Swiftech N-bridge water block..
It looks just like my cpu Swiftech block, but smaller.
A nice looking block..
In the interim I put a small fan on N-S bridge of the R2E.
Its easy to do as my mobo horizontal...
Temps on both N/S bridges dropped 5-6c each....
Here's a pic....
Swiftech

Hey Dan, here's some new memory I upgraded to, 12gig of Mushkin Red..
I soon will see how R2E acts with this memory...
Here's a link to what I ordered...
Newegg.com - mushkin 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 998691 - Desktop Memory

My son got his Rampage II installed this past Saturday,he's wanting to see how far he can go overclocked on air(with the stock intel fan),can you give me a tip on what to start with(is there a auto setting in the bios where I could raise it to at least 3 ghz is where he wants to start with)

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi there SS,
I am thinking about adding another 6 Gb of Corsair Dom GT memory also. Let me know if you see a difference, or were you running 12 Gb previously?

ODO,
I strongly recommend that you not use the stock Intel cooler. Anything is better than that unit, especially if you are going to OC even slightly. Even at stock friequencies it is.... However, if you insist and you get just the chip I have a bunch of Intel stock coolers I can send you, take them, Please Take them
If your Son has a D O step 920 you can drop the CPU voltage slightly. Mine is stable at as low as 1.21V @ 3.6 Ghz on air and as low as 1.22 @ 3.8 Ghz. It will give you better even better temps. 3.0 Ghz should be a snap, even with the stock (yuk) cooler.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I was running 9gig before, now 12gig Mushkin @ 5-5-5 timings..
To tell the truth the SSD's run so fast, that the OS always seem very quick..
I also run a ramdrive and use 3gig of the 12gig for it....
Here's a benchie of my new Muchkin and the timings...@ 1600..
Its hard to believe the 5-5-5 timings, but here's the benchie...

What always amazes me are your Temps. Although with this CNPS10X mine are just 5 degrees above yours now as long as I keep my ambient temps below 78F so I am comfortable with them now. Under full load they stay in the low 70's C.
My timings are 7-8-7 at 1600 but I have not tried to push them. WIndows 7 is really snappy. I did not put SSD's in as I felt the technology last Winter was not quite there (firmware mostly) so I put in a pair of V-Raptors in Raid 0. I may go SSD in a few months but I am waiting to see what will be anounced at CES. RIght now this rig is truly amazingly fast. Even some of the crappy antivirus suites do not even slow it down. I have found one however that seems to be truly optimized for WIn 7. It is the Norton net security 2010 Beta. Norton was so bad for so long I can not believe that I am recommending them but they seem to have gotten their act together.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Skully that is an awesome setup you have there, 4.2GHz, 12GB of CL5, and such low temps. I noticed in CPUz you look to be running mem at 1/3 (2:6) and 1200MHz. I tried last night to run at 4.0GHz (1600) and didn't make it yet. It will require more volts. I am at 3.3-3.65GHz depending on Turbo (20-21-22) and I agree with you and Dan that the i7-920 tears up Windows. I am really glad I bought into this setup. My TRUE is doing a great job to (King of air-cooling IMO).
