| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Glad you are feeling better. Here is a shot of my readings. Note the difference in the ASUS PC probe reading and the CoreTemp reading. The CoreTemp reading agrees with what the BIOS says. Anyway, take a look when you can and see if you have any suggestions. Oh, BTW, the 1204 BIOS flash went well, it even kept my settings from the previous 1104. ![]()

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Here's the temps of my cpu with a 3200mhz oc same as yours. Also Vcore @ 1.3v. I can get this same oc at Vcore 1.24v. I'm just trying to set my oc the same as yours to show ya the difference in temps. Now this with no strees test running. Asus Probe was never that accurate.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Wow, those Temps look really low. OK, so I removed the Zalman 9900. The AS looked even on both surfaces with no missed spots. I cleaned it off and did the straight edge trick and you are correct, neither of the two surfaces are totally flat but not off by more than about .001". I cleaned and conditioned the two surfaces and this time I used the supplied Zalman thermal comound and re seated the cooler.I noticed that the Artic Silver I was using was AS3, not 5, it is an old tube. Anyway, my Temps are better but still nowhere as good as yours. I am down on average 10 C . Both Real Temp and Core Temp agree and read the same. 50 53 48 52 so it is much bettwr but not great, especially for 3.2 Ghz. Do you think the liquid cool you are using would make that much difference? One other thing is that I am running with an open case right now so my air flow may not be optimum.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Zalman thermal comound is what I'm using now. At least ya got it down 10c. I've read on the net, a lot of people are having high temps with the i7 920. What you need to do, is put the cpu under full load. See what temps that gives. I don't think I'd settle for less then low 40's @ idle and no higher then low 70's @ load. And that's with air. Remember high voltages can cause high temps. Leaving some voltages on auto, and oc'ing, can cause those voltages to rise as you oc. Here's a good read on the new i7 cpu's voltages and oc'ing. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuch...howdoc.aspx?i=3184&p=5

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Thanks. As of this morning my temps are down an average 3 C more, down to 47 49 45 48 perhaps the Zalman thermal compound cures or tends to seep in with time. I also ran the RealTemp XS benchmark and got a score of 1932 @ 3.3 Ghz. I will set the voltages manually. This is my weekend to really start to play with this rig, up to now it has been more of a spare time thing. I will also load prime95 on it later today.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Yeah temps will or should improve as the thermal compound cures. It really does take a lot of reading and playing with oc'ing #'s to get a good oc. Ya gotta enjoy this sort of stuff........me I hate it...not! I just wish this cold would clear up, so's I'd have a clear head. Its a good hobby for a retiree with the time.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** I failed retirement years ago, it did not work for me I just ran Prime 95, my tempt jumped to 90 98 82 99 sorta scary but no BSOD. When I ended the test the temps droped right away to 45 48 45 47 which are the best ones yet. Either I have a hot chip or this cooler is not doing a great job. I am sure it is mounted and seated well. As you say it could be voltages as most of them are set to auto.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Yeah that is to hot for full load temps, I'd look at setting the voltages manually. Then see what ya get.

If you get a chance would you send me some settings I can try for a 3.4 Ghz OC including voltages? No hurry but any suggestions will be appreciated.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Ok, I'm going to oc my cpu to 34gig. As if it was for my 24/7 use. It's funny because I never oc this low....We'll give it a go. I'll post it using TurboV when I'm ready. TurboV shows all the voltages.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** OK, I am also beginning to think that my cooler is just not doing a good job. The reviews on ot were decient and I have had good results using the older version but even with no OC I think my temps are about 10 C to high. I do not think that trying to reseat it again will do any good.

| Re: *** rampage ii extreme *** Dan -- What method did you use to apply the Zalman thermal compound? If you simply spread it evenly all over the cpu surface, I'd suggest removing it and reapplying it in a single line per the instructions at the Arctic Silver site: Arctic Silver Incorporated - Arctic Silver 5 Instructions Note the specific orientation instructions for the Core i7 at the lower right of the page. In my experience (albeit with Core 2 Duo's) their instructions about applying a single line work much better than spreading the paste evenly across the entire surface. Regards, -- Al
