Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Thanks Al, I did not do exactly that. I used the old instructions from the AS3 that I have and then on the second attempt I used the Zalman compound using their instructions exactly. I just ordered a new and RMA'd this 9900 and I ordered some AS-5. It should be in on Monday and I will do exactly per these i7 instructions and see if it helps.
I love this MOBO and CPU so far but the higher than expected temps is a roadblock I need to get past before I do much else.
BTW, Win 7 boots in 25 seconds on this rig compared to Vista taking 90 seconds on my QX6700 rig.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

These screen shots go with the template....The temps are @ full CPU load.
I think this is a good set up...A base to work from. You can try a longer 8hr prime95 strees to see if it holds.

Hey Dan, I just finished my touch up on the template. When you get your new cpu cooler, you'll have something to work with.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I believe in using the manufactures directions, for what ever thermal compound I'm using at the time. Albeit if it/manufactures directions, don't seem to work well with a concave cpu. Then I'm a wee apt to see what we can come up with, here in the laboratory. In fact sometimes I've seen plain ole silicone grease work quite nicely. When the more pricey stuff did not cool as well. To me, to many people don't take into account this very fact. And that is ALL Inlet heatspreaders have poor to fair mating surfaces. They are all junk when it comes to being a true level surface. Its a real shame they can't do better.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

You sure did a lot of work to answer my question Sir Skully. I really owe you.
What lab are you affiliated with?
As for the surface of the chip, I wonder if lapping it to a more level surface is possiable?
Thanks again. I am going to give this a try

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

You're welcome, and nothing owed. Yes lapping a cpu will work if done right. But I believe it voids the Intel warranty. The lab I speak of is really my man cave. I have my own room in the basement, I've always called my laboratory. It all got started in the early days of water cooling. When ya had to build your own water rig. No ready made water kits. A lot different things were tried with water. I also had imaginary lab assistants the Whistle pig and lab dragon......

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

I understand, my office and computer room is the "Baer's Den"

I may try laping the top surface if the next 9900 does no better. I had planed on going to an i7975 when they become available but this 920 is a lot of fun. I would not be quite so daring with a $1000 CPU.

I used your settings, I had to go back and forth as some of the settings were not available to me until I had set others. The only one that I was not allowed to set was the CPU Ratio setting. Without changing that I am at 3.3 with Temps of 49 52 48 51 or so and stable
With Prime 95 for 10 minutes my temps went through the roof but no BSOD or lock up. Temps went to 87 97 78 99 I know that I have the above mentioned Temp issue anyway so that is a different issue.
Again, thanks so much. I will play wityh this some more and get back to you.

Here is a shot:

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Yeah its tough learning new technology. As with the i7 920 and R2E mobo. But for me that's where the fun hides. Glad the template helped. It gives ya a good base to work from...
920 reminds me of the ole Northwood cpu @ 2400mhz, that I ran all the way to 4gig. Did you try the cooler that came with the CPU? Just to see what the temps look like. Maybe not worth the effort..........

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Up-date on my R2E/920 oc'ing. It seems that after running 9+hrs of full 100% CPU load. That this 4200mhz oc is stable enough for me. It scores in SuperPI M1 in 9's, no cold boot thingie, plays games great, I know that's mostly do to the CrossFire GPU's. The 920 has been all that I had hoped for. And much, much more. even down to great temps......Its Faasssttt.....cool and
smoooooth....... We don't need no stinking high prices, just a wee touch of oc'ing elbow grease....

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Great Idea SS, before I install the replacement 9900 I will try the stock cooler, just to gather data.

BTW, I reenabled Hyperthreading and saw no increase in Temps. Once I get the temperature issue fixed I will see what this rig can do. I am hoping for at least 3.6 stable on air but I bet it will do even better.
As for the kind words, they are well diserved, look at all the help you give others by sharing what you have learned.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Thanks, from what I read on the net. I'd say 3.8 is the sweet spot, for 24/7 air cooled. And maybe a wee higher. You most likely could get into windows @ 4.2 But being stable on air, another story. Yeah it will be nice to see what your rig can do. With good temps/better cooling.
