Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi Everyone, Congrats Sir Skully on the awsome oc -holly crap look at those temps- and the awsome setup.
I've been running the Rampage II E and the core I7 920 for about a week now, having the same temp issues as Dan-Baer.
I totally agree with everyone that the stock HS blows chuncks (really wish intel would do better on them).
I also checked cpu for flatness, and that too blows chunks as well. I ended up lapping the cpu finishing it with 2000 grit wet and then hand polishing to an almost mirror finish. I know, I voided the intel warranty, but I too was getting tired of waiting for the 975's to hit the street and just took the plunge with the 920 knowing that nearly everyone that overclocks are getting pretty good results with it.
I was originally going to go with the Vigor Monsoon III LT with the 975 but decided to try the stock HS with the 920, And since my temps were so high at default bios settings, I lapped the stock HS too, lol couldn't hurt that thing any Hahaha!
But to no avail, the temps are still very high. have tried reseating the HS several times (I do have an issue with the HS mounting and still feeling very very loose) can actually raise the HS up off the cpu about an 1/16 inch after installing the HS fan assy onto the motherboard.
So now I'm waiting for the Monsoon III to get here, it's due to arrive tomorrw, and I'll give it all another go. Hope it gives better results or I'll be looking into taking the plunge with H2O.
If thats the case, I hope I can get some much needed help and pointers with water cooling from you Skully, I've never done any water cooling before so that's all new to me! But first I want to see what the Monsoon III will do for my temps.
by the way, I did set manual settings. I didn't like the auto settings and seeing the voltages change from idle to full loads.
one thing that does suprise me though is that my cpu is totally prime 95 stabe 6+ hours at stock clock and core voltage set manually to 1.00
but even at that, my real temps are above 70C

Will Post more once I get the new HS Fan installed.

here is my setup

Thanks exc, welcome to the RE2 club. Nice rig! If ya go water I can offer some advice. If and when ya do, just give a yell. It just seems from what I read on the net. That air cooling isn't quite getting the job done. Anywho welcome to the RE2 thread.....

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Welcome EXC. we will all get through this together
I am just starting to install my new 9900. The surface of my 920 is not flat, it is slightly convex, perhaps .002" higher in the center.
Depending on how this works I will also be considering laping and water cool.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

MUCH BETTER
I checked the flatnes of the new 9900 and it was better. I installed it using a new tube of AS-5 exactly per the instructions on the Artic Silver page for i7 cores, which is a little different than C2Qd cores.
My temps with no load are down an average of 10 degrees C. With no load they are now:
39 39 40 37
and with Prime 95 running at 98.6% load they are 65 67 65 62
At 50% load they are 45 45 45 47
After Prime 95 and a 30 second cool down the tempe are: 40 40 42 38 and that is at 3.465 Ghz.
I am happy with the results but I guess those of us on here and in the other similar forums are never satisfied.

Hey Dan congrats on temps .....
Yeah now those are temps ya can live with. Infact the temps should get better as thermal paste settles in. Now you can start working on your oc.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi Dan, And Thank You Both for the warm welcomes to the R II E club hehe
Congrats on the better temps Dan, sorry to hear about your other heating issue (water hearter blowout) I hope your oc goes really well, although I don't think either of us are going to get near Sir Skully's AWSOME oc on air, but should get somewhat close to 4.0 with livable temps now that your pc's temp issues are taken care of
I hope I made a decent choice with the Monsoon III LT, I read a lot of reviews on several different coolers, and like most reviews, some say this one is better then that and others say that one is better then this. I think some of the review sites are tipping the scale in a favor for favor type of thing if you know what I mean.

Sir Skully, I've tried getting the 1204 beta bios from the link you posted to Dan a few pages back (page 5 I think) the link seems to be dead to me, although ALL of Asus's sites seem to be overloaded or dead for the last week or so and takes me forever to navigate any of thier selections.
I was wondering if you had an alternative link perhaps? I would like to get the 21 mulitplier without having tubo set on.

I think I have a decent core i7, (once I get MY temp issues resolved anyway) I let prime 95 run pretty much all day while I was at work yesterday, except for when I got my lunch break, at which point i shut it down to lower the core voltage and restart it. now prime has been running for the past 12+ hours with the core voltage at 0.95, Just letting things burn in per say, I don't really want to push an oc until I get temps down but I think this sounds promising! temps are still qite high 70, 68, 70, 71 at stock clock
My new cooler won't be here until Thursday, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it resolves my heat issue. I'll post an update once it arrives and I get it installed.

Edit - Asus must of heard me complaining about thier sites being so slow to navigate, they just updated thier R II E downloads with the new 1204 bios lol

Hey exc, you have the 1204 bios now? Hopefully your temp problems will be at an end with the new cooler. You can try this link for 1204..ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/LG...treme-1204.zip
I tested the above link and it downloaded for me.....

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi Guys, here is an update:
This morning with the ambient temp in my office my CPU temps were:
37 36 38 32
I raised my ambient temp in the office to 72 F and then ran a full AV scan which used 30% or the system (what can I say, Free AVG as mt Symantec 09 and my Trend Micro do not work in Win 7 yet). With the rig running at 3.465 Ghz and at 30% load with the higher room temp the CPU temps went up to 44 46 48 45
Now that the scan is done with the room temp still at 72 the CPU has settled down to 36 36 38 34 so it looks like I am now OK temp wise at this clock speed. Now I can get my wiring finished and start to play with the OC settings.
BTW, as this is purely a test rig for now I am planing on running with no software antivirus and insteasd using a Yoggie gatekeeper.
Yoggie Security Systems - Hardware-based Internet Security
They have sent me beta 64 bit drivers so we will see. It should free up many system resorces when compaired to software based solutions.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

Hi Sir Skully, Yes, I have the 1204 bois installed now, kind of gave me a scare tho not that I should of been scared since the motherboard has easy bios flashback.
I downloaded the 1204 bois to my computer lastnight and used asus update to flash it, everything went smooth until it rebooted the system.
The computer shut off for a second or two and powered back up and just hung there with a blank monitor for 10 minutes
I powered it off and used the clear cmos button on the rear I/O (very handy little add on to the R E II) no more fumbling around inside the case looking for the jumpers.
powered it back up and everything was fine

YaY Congrats Dan-Baer, now lets see how close to Sir Skully's oc you can get and still keep those temps under 70C lol

I wanted to try Windows 7 but I missed the beta downloads so I'm waiting for it to release, hopefully just a month or so now.

Re: *** rampage ii extreme ***

They are still saying late in the year but I will bet that Win 7 RC 1 will be out in the next 60 days and commercial will be out by September. These Beta's run out in August so something will be out before they as I do not think they would want so many od us that are learning WIin 7 to be without.
