Rampage II Extreme or P6T6 WS Revolution

Hey folks. Trying to decide between these two boards for a new system I'm putting together. Other parts I've decided on would be the i7 920, and 6 gigs of Kingston HyperX 1800mhz memory (maybe 12gig... haha!) Graphics I'm still undecided between a GTX 280/285 or something else, still researcing as to which one to go for.

I am into overclocking for sure, still running a P4 3.2ghz system so this will be a major upgrade, so am a tad out of the loop as to what good to get at the moment, so lots of reading and whatnot. Not posted on here in some time but you guys have always been awesome help

Thanks in advance

How does this board run 12 gigs of memory? I'm tempted to try

Also, are you air cooled?

I'm running liquid cooling. R2E runs 12gigs fine, I run 12gigs for awhile. Then went to 9 gig, and it also runs fine.

Re: Rampage II Extreme or P6T6 WS Revolution

Hmm, I keep reading the i7s are a very hot chip!

I'm considering watercooling again. Used to run a swiftech setup on the below system when I had it sitting at 4ghz 24/7. Any thoughts on an external watercooling setup like the Zalmann Reserator XT for a 920?

You would probably be fine with one of the high end air cooler (like TRUE 120 w/a good fan or the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366). Good air cooling will get you pretty close to 4GHz on the i920. If you want to push your rig to it's limits - then I think you should build your own H2O system which, for less than the price the Reserator XT, would kick the Reserator's butt.

Interesting. Any other external solutions worth a shout? Koolance exos 2.5?

What'd you recommend for cooling a i7 920 and graphics card (probably a gtx 275/285) if I were to put a system together. Bear in mind i'll be keeping my Lian Li V1100 case and space inside is not bad, but not generous hence looking at an external solution.

Well, if you don't mind altering your case - you can cut an opening in the top of you case. Then I think you'd have room to at least mount the fans, tubing and pump internally. You may need to mount the Rad externally and just use 120mm fan grills to protect the fins. I think you'd do well with a 2x120 Rad, that way you can use lower speed fans and still get good cooling (Noctua has some great low noise fans that cool as well as other fans with 20-25% more airflow).

For cooling block there are a slew of them. DTek, Swiftech, EK, and DangerDen are some of the best. Best rads are probably EK and Thermochill. The Swiftech pump MCP655-B (Lang D5 I think) is a good choice. I would also go with a non-conductive cooling liquid (I think Danger Den sells some good stuff). I don't know about the best GFX cooling blocks - Skully probably can tell you.

GL!

Yeah, that is an idea. Been looking around and seeing what I could potentially do.

Awaits Skullys input also

For me Swiftech is great, I run Swiftech triple radiator, with 6 120mm fans. 3 front and 3 inside in a push/pull setup. Swiftech water pump, Swiftech water block, DangerDen full cover GPU water block. The Swiftech water pump is quiet. If I were to build another water rig today it would be all Swiftech, but for the GPU and it would be again DangerDen. You can pay more money get a silver water block or other fancy stuff. But for real quality water parts at good prices swiftech/DangerDen are hard to beat. Remember I've been running the Swiftech parts for 1 1/2+ yrs. trouble free......

The only issue I find is fitting it all inside my case
