| 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Am thinking about upgrading my main box and the price of a nice ATI 4870 1 Gig is VERY resonable. And the power requirements are not heavy at all----perfect for my existing box.... But I have a wonderful old 8800 GTX that has stood the test of time and I'm wondering if it's worth the upgrade. Will I see a fairly large performance jump???? Advantages?? I play mostly First Person Shooters Crysis FarCry2 Stalker FEAR HL2 Etc..... Opinions welcome...... John

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Well you would be going from DX9 to DX10. Also almost everybody says the image quality of ATI cards is better. Performance wise the 4870 1GB appears to handle the higher resolutions well on newer games, not sure about the 8800GTX any longer. Power wise you shouldn't be adding to much more coming from a 8800GTX. |

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig The 4870 is faster, and does have 1GB of memory, which means you can get away with more, when it comes to the graphic options, plus if you decide to get a second one, you can easily do Crossfire, if you have an Intel chipset motherboard that has two PCI Express X16 slots on it. I would think about the 4870, and possibly doing Crossfire. I'm running two GDDR4 3870's in my machine

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig The upgrade to the 4870 seems like a reasonable choice, and from what I have heard its an overall great card. With the added memory and the speed of DDR5 youll be able to snag some extra frames too. Sandog - If I remember correctly the 8800GTX was one of the first DX10 compatible cards out there so he woulden't be experiencing that kind of a difference. Please correct me if im wrong.

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Your right, it is DX10. I had an 8800GTS 640 which I guess was DX10 also. |

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Thanks Fellas..... 4870 1 Gig looks like the perfect little upgrade..... Am going to reformat my machine and go to Vista Ultimate 64 Bit And bump up the RAM to 8 gigs..... With my existing q6600, the whole upgrade will cost me like $300 and should give me a nice little boost----a clean new OS----and the ability to get another couple years out of the machine..... Or at least till Windows 7 is released.....

I''ll get Windows 7 when it comes out, but I'm not going to be so fast about putting it on my system, not when I have Windows Vista 64 doing just fine for me.

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Excellent upgrade. I'm very pleased with my rig on Vista 64, 8GB of RAM and an 4870X2 card. Now that everythiing is watercooled (midi tower stuffed with tubes), no more noise and heat problems. Greetings Dru

| Re: 8800GTX versus 4870 1 Gig Likewise I am happy with Vista 64, (for gaming), 4GB of ram and my HD4870... and its only a 512MB version... I can only expect the 1GB version to be even better
