ATI 5870 Reviews coming in...

Here are a couple of reviews. Looks like the card is a winner, with heat levels not too bad and noise level under control as well;

They look very good, come on MSI and come out with the 5870 with better cooling!

the 5870 is the fastest single GPU card available BUT the performance is a bit underwhelming...yeah it performs well but the difference over a GTX285 is not that great...the main thing the 5870 has going for it is DX11 support (along with lower power consumption) but other then that the card is not what I was expecting...I have a feeling Nvidia's DX11 offering will be far more interesting (based on a new architecture)

Sapphire's HD5870 and HD5850:

SAPPHIRE HD5800 Series

Lookin' good. I read that the MSRP is $299 for the 5850 and $399 for the 5870. Shouldn't have to wait too long to see what street pricing ends up being.

Will Nvidi'a offering be in the same price range????

ATI is selling a bezillion of their 4800 series because.
1.----it's a great series
2.----very reasonble power requirements----no gigantor PSU needed
3.----for the first time in YEARS----the cost of a great video card is actually semi reasonable..... Sub $200 for a top of the line card....

Things heating up again in the graphics card wars-----I LOVE it!!!

So far it looks like the ATI 5870 is the card to get.
If the price is right.
Got a love graphics card war.....

probably not...but for me it's mostly about performance...I already have a beefy PSU so that doesn't matter to me but as I mostly do high end gaming on my PC it's all about image quality and performance...price is a factor as well but if that was the primary consideration in a computer build then AMD would be wiping the floor with Intel...the lower power consumption figures are also a bit overrated as how much $$ are you actually saving in electricity by running a lower end GPU?...a few $$?

I'm not loyal to any particular manufacturer as I'm constantly switching back and forth between the 2...my last 2 video cards have been Nvidia (GTX 260 & 8800GT) but before that my previous 2 were ATI (X1900XT & 9800 Pro)...so for me it's about who has the better card/features...I used to think that PhysX was a joke but Batman: Arkham Asylum has me reconsidering that...so having the ability to run onboard PhysX is a huge plus for Nvidia in my book (plus you can also set up a dual GPU setup with one card serving as a dedicated PhysX card without enabling SLI)

the 5870 is a good card but the performance should have been much greater over their previous generation and Nvidia's current offerings

Re: ATI 5870 Reviews coming in...

Toms has a review up now... over here
Here's their take on it:
Quote:
When you consider a $379 price point, the Radeon HD 5870 falls between the GeForce GTX 295 and the Radeon HD 4870 X2 (at $500, Nvidia has no choice but to cut the price on its GTX 295).

Re: ATI 5870 Reviews coming in...

I'm in the market for a new card as my 4870 just cant cut it sometimes due to the limited on board DDR (512)... and I'm glad I held off for these new cards which are improvement over the 4890, with some new features and support for DX11...

the power consumption is especially attractive with Toms review showing 2x5870's idling less than my current single 4870!

The noise level is a little off-putting tho; any increase in noise, (however slight), is so unsexy... maybe the 5850 will hit the sweet spot for me, cant wait for those reviews.

That's why I upgraded from my 3870X2 to the 4870X2 I have now. The X2 does hold its ground. One of these days I may put in the second matching 4870X2 I have. But I want watercooling to do that. The 5870 doesn't have enough to make me upgrade, but a 5870X2 ... hmmmmmmmm.
