| i was wondering if anyone has thought of using a stock p4 heatsink with the 9700 pro or any video card. i've heard about using old PIII heatsinks but i figure why spend $8 on that (buy more AS3) and try it with the stock P4. if anyone has tried this or has any advice please post.

| Interesting. . . but, wouldn't the height and weight/mounting present a problem? I can see that combo eating up 3 pci slots, and how would you secure a socket 423/478 heatsink to a video card? The load against the AGP slot may be too much too. |

| Similar mod... I just did a similar mod over the weekend. I don't need the PCI slots on this rig so I wasn't worried about the space. You can see my mod in this thread. From my experience weight is less a factor than the actual added bulk of suck a big cooler. |

| One bit of advice about putting these heavier heat sinks on is that you are possibly putting quite a bit of weight on the card and unless you brace it, you can run the risk of it creaping out of the AGP. I have a Cooljag 313 1u HSF and that is heavy enough so just make sure you are comfortable with possibly doing damage with a heavy heat sink. I saw in an other thread someone put a pen as a brace so if those of you putting these 478 heat sinks on, this may be a good idea as a brace.

| Good tip That's an excellent bit of advice Transitbus, my AGP slot on the 8RDA+ has a little tab that locks the AGP card into place. |

| Thats a pretty big sink(P4), would take some time chopping it up to fit. I used a p3 fc-pga unit I already had, and thats a very tight fit plus its tall taking up PCI 1, and 2. A CoolJag 1u would be worth the effort, and work well I'd think. http://www.1coolpc.com/ ![]()

| friendofphobos do you know what kind of heatsink that is you have? that would work really well, and i might be able to get my card over 400 core. If anyone else has put any new heatsink on their card and has pictures please post them, and it anyone else has ideas on good heatsinks post that too! thanks!

I removed the shrowd with a flat-head screw driver but if you were going to use a 60mm fan, you'd want to keep that on. | |
