I've had the fx 5600. It was garbage for playing games. I don't know about the 9600 though. GL.

look at the xfx geforce 5900. it is $196 at newegg.com and has better stock speeds than the ATI 9600. ATI has problems with drivers. If I want to play this game I need this driver...but wait, my temp on the GPU is too hot so I need this driver. Your decision....if you want to full around with drivers so you can get the best graphics...go ATI. IF you want nothing to do with it and sacrice FPS and some quality...go geforce.

sorry but that is not quite right ATI drivers have come along way since the old days. I have recently upgraded to a 9800 pro from a GF4 TI4400 and have had zero problems with ati drivers/software. I merely uninstalled my NV drivers, ran drivercleaner, removed GF4, installed ATI card, rebooted and installed omega 3.9 drivers and that is it! never touched them again and i get good scores in benches so i know it's running as it should and I've had zero probs with any games either.... This is my first ever ATI card and I am well chuffed with it

if you really want cheap, go with a Radeon 9500 64mb non-pro. You can find one at under 100 bucks, and you can softmod it to a 9500 Pro, which is as fast as a 9600XT.

Get a 9500 pro or 9700 pro. Check Ebay. They will outperform the 9600 and are great cards IMO.

I'd go with an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. You can pick one up for about $150 online and it performs well on recent games. This is the card I went with when I helped my friend build his new computer and he's loving it. Keep in mind that there are EZ and Lite versions of the 9600 Pro so make sure you get the regular version, which is about the price I mentioned before.

I think you will like the 9600 Pro. Just put one in a pc I built and it works really well all around. 3dMark03 was around 3300-3500 depending on the settings. 3dMark2001 gave about 12,700. Your scores look right with normal settings (default). If you look in your setup, you probably have let the application decide selected. Set all your sliders to the left for performance. You will see a definite improvement in your scores. I haven't tried ocing but I have heard the card does this pretty well. HTH

Aperature size:

I think you want USWC enabled if possible. Here is a post from this site.
