I just saw this in a review, doesnt look good.People that have Asus P4S8X mainboard can you give me your thoughts about this?

From firingsquad review:
Compatibility: We’re still waiting on a RADEON 9700 PRO card that will work properly with the SiS 648 chipset, as the world’s first AGP 8X chipset for the Pentium 4, you’d think this issue would have been addressed before the RADEON 9700 PRO shipped to market. If you currently own a SiS 648-based motherboard and purchase a RADEON 9700 PRO card, don’t be surprised if you run into stability problems, especially at higher resolutions.

I've been an Nvidia fan for some time now. Owned a TNT, then a GeForce 2 GTS, and currently I'm using an MSI GeForce Ti4600 (great card, no complaints). I'm building a new system sometime between now and next month (wife is getting my current PC), and just spent all day reading every review I could get my hands on where the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro was pitted against an Nvidia FX 5800 Ultra (my original upgrade pick). And here is what I have to say; brand names are irrelevant. Performance is everything. I never thought it would happen, but yes, my next card is going to be an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. When it comes to heavy loads (AF+AA+Hi-Rez) the ATI card really shows it's superiority. And the visual quality is definitely better. I've got the cash so I may wait for the 256 MB DDRII version before purchasing, it all depends on how long of a wait I'm looking at and benchmarks to see how much better it will be than the regular 9800 Pro. And that is my humble 2 cents (1.35704 USD according to XE.com).

Edit: Oh wait, there is one complaint with my Ti4600. No One Lives Forever hates it for some reason. Cutscenes always play out of sync and end abruptly before the audio can finish. Runs fine with the older GF 2 GTS, same system and drivers.

Some people have issues, some don't. I'm one of the ones that don't have instability issues. However, my system isn't pumping out what it's suppose to be capable of. My highest score was only 12608 on 3DMark 2001 SE.

You should look at the Intel/SiS forum portion of this site for more info.

My older board was an Epox SIS648 motherboard. I had exactly the same system as in my sig except the Epox board. I had no stability issues what so ever, one BIOS upgrade from Epox and the board was stable as a ROCK. I was getting an average of 14600 3d marks and at one time I got 14800+. I was really happy with that board and I recomend the Epox boards over any other brand out there.

P4S8X + Hercules 3dProphet 9700 Pro no probs!

I do avail of the P4S8x (two yellow caps edition), BIOS 1005.009 and a Hercules 3DProphet 9700 Pro. The Hercules is is reported to be a pain in the ***** when it comes to compatibility with SIS 648 but for me it all runs perfect (fast writes on, AGP setting 8x in BIOS and in Catalyst 3.1).

Maybe this will help you. Lately I visited a computershop and they told me the Gigabyte 9700 Pro is the best compatible 9700 Pro card out there. I cannot verify, but you'll newer know...

i still do believe that all ATI 9700 Pro is the same reference from ATI card

even worse is, GiGabyte which i believe is just an ATI 9700 PRo built by ATI version (RED Pcb) like Powercolor, and HiS Excalibur

whilst Hercules got a different color of PCB board might be slightly different, though still, they are the same in general

At stock with no overclocking or RAM tweaking you should be around 4500-4600 in 3D Mark 2003.

Not if I have time to play with it. Cheaper then my other past bad habits.

9800 from reviews I saw weren't much faster than the 9700. Card will be no good in a year? Heh.. close but I think you can get more life out of it. STALKER and Far Cry are what I am waiting for and unfortunately they are kinda Nvidia games, but I'm pretty confident my 9700 will run with it and Doom3 as Carmack said.. so considering games will be based on these engines I'd say it's w safe to think these cards will go past a year.

Nvidia cards are proven slower than even the 9700, so really who cares about Nvidia. I've had a Nvidia based card in my machine since my 3D Pro turbo and only recently caved and bought the 9700 which turns out to really be a 9700 Pro and aside from a few lockups initially, the card works great. Games are all at almost highest quality and FPS is really good still.

I'm not looking back and I think Nvidia has a long way to go to restore both faith in its past customers but also to beat ATI. ATI wont give up the lead easily.

Pretty sad if you think about it, Nvidia bought up all the 3DFX intellectual rights and the 5800 is all they have to show for it. Looks like Nvidia should have milked the cow a bit more. Wish I could have been at the unveiling of the FX so I could boo him!! Hahaha..it would have been great.
