Catalyst Control Center will not open

I decided to update the CAT 8.9 drivers, which I installed when I built my Rampage Formula, to the current CAT 9.6 drivers.

I rebooted XP into Safe Mode and removed the old drivers via the XP Control Panel ATI uninstall utility. Then rebooted and installed the CAT 9.6 drivers. Then rebooted.

But the Catalyst Control Center will not open no matter what I do.

Is there a simple solution to fixing this?

Re: Catalyst Control Center will not open

Try reinstalling in windows, the CAT 9.6 installer will give you the option to remove the old drivers. After you remove them, then reinstall.....

You're welcome, and I just installed the CAT 9.7 drivers. Using the above method, all went well. I knew about the CAT 9.7 drivers from Bleedinedge.

Skully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did the one step CAT install as you discribed with the CAT 9.7 drivers.

There was no "option" to uninstall. The CAT 9.7 installation procedure just started, however it did show a lot of things being uninstalled in the installer window followed by a lot of things being installed. In the end, after rebooting, CCC opened and it said I had the CAT 9.7 drivers installed along with the new CCC.

So why do the CAT installation instructions say to go through a procedure of uninstalling and rebooting before even touching the new drivers?

And, how do I know for sure I have all the "old" driver files gone and all the "new" driver files installed?

Re: Catalyst Control Center will not open

That's strange as I got the option to uninstall ATI drivers. Here's Driver sweeper that will clean up old ATI drivers.
If you feel ya need it, its free at this site.

Hey Skully!!!!!

Why would there be an option?

If one has old drivers that one wants to update; and then one doubleclicks and launches the newest driver installer; and one answers "yes" to the "Do you wish to install the new drivers?" question; then why would there be an option?

???An option to not uninstall the old drivers and still install the new drivers???

Or are we just confusing the "Do you wish to proceed with installation?" Yes/No button?

Did you use Driver Sweeper?

Re: Catalyst Control Center will not open

When ya down load ATI drivers, and you open the installer.
There's a screen that comes up with two options. One install drivers or # two remove ATI drivers. Yeah I've used driver sweep before, but not this time.

I'm going to take another look at the installation procedure.

I didn't like the jerkyness I was getting in HellGate:London with the CAT 9.7 drivers. So I re-installed a ghost image with the CAT 8.9 drivers to check things out. With 8.9, HG:L is running smooth again.

I'll go for another install of the CAT 9.7 drivers soon. I'm installing the XP 32 bit drivers.

Re: Catalyst Control Center will not open

Yeah maybe another look see at the ATI installer. You'll see the options. Then again, maybe your old ATI drivers work better...

Question

Maybe you got something there skully.

The purpose of the driver upgrade is to get the box ready for the Asus 4870X2 cards. And, I'm curious to see how the new and latest drivers do with my currently installed 3870X2 card. I am expecting some kind of "better" performance from the new drivers with the 3870X2 card.

On the other hand, maybe I should just skip the 3870X2/CAT 9.7 drivers combo and go straight to the 4870X2/Cat 9.7 drivers combo. But I can't help thinking: Just doesn't seem right. One would think that the new drivers would help out the 3870X2 card.
