Choosing graphic card

Hello guys,
I am planning on buying a new graphic card..i have a range of up to $250.
I have narrowed down my search to geforce x260.But some of my friends advised me 9800gtx.anyways wanted to ask which card should i buy? Any heating or other problems that i should be aware of before buying these cards?
Open to suggestion for other cards too.I m confused

Thank you

Re: Choosing graphic card

Hi DrnkenFists!

Here's a nice site to compare graphics cards.

The GTX260 seems to be way faster but also more power hungry (be aware that there are three X260 cards).

The superlatives page suggests the Radeon 4870 for your price range.

Greetings

Dru

Re: Choosing graphic card

According to this comparsion the hd4870 seems top be overall faster, has a slightly lower pixel and texture fillrate, but also needs about 30W less (=less heat).

Here are reviews from anandtech and tomshardware that suggest that the hd4870 is clearly better then the gtx260.

Greetings

Re: Choosing graphic card

That depends on the other hardware you are using.

As you can see in my sig, i am using a 625W PSU and this seems to be sufficient for my HD4870X2 and the rest of the equipment.

I watercool my card because the fan did get very loud, don't know anything about 4870 regarding heat and noise.
(But those topics are covered in the reviews i linked to)

Greetings

Re: Choosing graphic card

Wait for the Nvidia 275 (well, EVGA has one out at Newegg, IIRC).

Re: Choosing graphic card

BTW, the 275 is out. It's a bit pricey atm, because it has just been released - if you can wait a couple of weeks, you can get a card that's as fast as a GTX 280 for ~250!

Re: Choosing graphic card

u'd be surprised. Socket draw is only 350W max on my power supply. And this after several hours of gaming on my machine.
