dead card?

I been fixing and friend of mines computer and one thing i noticed was his video card seem to not have any drivers loaded for it so i went to nvidia to get drivers for his card but when i then restart the computer it just loads the wxp screen then goes to a back screen and then goes into standby mode and sometimes gives me a blue screen saying something about nv4_disp.
I tried deleting the drivers and used driver cleaner too and try to use older and different drivers and still get nothing,
Long as there no drivers it seems to work but of course windows move all choppy and scrolling too.
Plus when having the card in for only 1-2 mins and then wen to go to swap it from another card i had laying around his card is on the hot side for only being on for a short time.
He has a older 5200fx which i heard can be little buggy.
I tired his card in my PC for only 2 secs and windows seems to have found it but i didnt go into it much id figured it was working so took it out again.
Also when his card was in and kinda working the screen would kinds flicker really fast every so often.
Im thinking his card is dead but just in case its not i thought i would come here and ask. Maybe there something i have missed
