EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

I need to get a vid card for the new PC I'm building for my daughter (P45, E7200, 8GB, Vista x64).
She likes racing games. I would like to spend approximately 100USD and have settled on the EVGA 9800GT cards. There are 2 models in the price range. The first is a single slot reference design and the second is a dual slot cooler design (which I like, because it expels hot air out of the case):
Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N971-TR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
The price on the dual slot model is better and I would prefer a dual slot, but the reviews are not as good, so I am undecided.

Any opinions, or better yet, personal experience with these cards?
TIA.

Look's like the same card to me, just with better cooling.

What reviews are you talking about?

Greetings

Dru

P.S.: Any cheap hd4850's available for you?

Re: EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

Hi Dru.
Yeah, they are basically the same card, different cooler. I was referring to the user reviews on those Newegg pages. The one with the dual slot cooler is 95USD after mail in rebate.

The cheapest 4850 I see is this one, 130USD after mail in rebate:
Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4850 TOP/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Re: EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

Hi PeterT!

It looks to me that the reviews for the dual slot cooler card are not so good because it is bigger, and because an additional fan blowing air aout of the case can eventually lead to higher cpu temps (but only 1 or 2 °).
I always liked dual slot coolers the blow the hot air out of the case.

About 35 USD more for the ATI card, hmm, don't know if it's worth it.
What kind of racing games is or would she be playing?
What resolution is or would be the preferred one?
BTW, the HD 4850 is DX10.1 whereas the 9800GT is DX10.

Greetings

Dru

Re: EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

Thanks for the input, Dru. She plays Grid racing on my 8800GTS 512 and it runs great. So, the 9800GT should be fine. I think I'll go with the dual slot 9800GT for 95USD. I prefer to use cards with dual slot coolers because they exhaust the hot air out of the case.

Re: EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

Hi PeterT!

Here's another suggestion:
"RACE DRIVER: GRID

The HD 4830 really comes into its own against the 9800 GT in this game, where it was considerably faster at all resolutions. At 1,920 x 1,200 it recorded a minimum frame rate of 51fps and average frame rate of 64fps while the 9800 GT was well behind with a minimum frame rate of just 39fps and an average frame rate of 50fps. The game was playable on the 9800 GT at 1,920 x 1,200, but the cheaper HD 4830 was faster.

The HD 4850 was much faster than the other cards, recording a minimum frame rate of 58fps and average frame rate of 75fps at 1,920 x 1,200."

Greetings

Dru

Re: EVGA 9800GT Models - Opinions Please

Hey Dru . After seeing those numbers, I think you changed my mind. The dual slot 8800GT would be 104USD after MIR & shipping. This Asus 4850 would be 130USD after MIR:
Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4850 TOP/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
That's only a 26USD difference. Unless I change my mind again today, I think I'll get the 4850. It is a little more than I wanted to spend and is not a dual slot cooler, but it will give me considerably better performance and a little future proofing. I hope it doesn't heat up the case too much.
Thanks.
