I just put a Pentium 1 cooler and fan from radio shack on my 9700 core with thermal adhesive(artic alumina). It looks like it will work, but is there ANY chance the thing may fall off because I didn't have any method of clamping it.It's just on by the adhesive. The fan/heatsink weighs about as much as 2 packs of ciggaretes,so I'm not too worried....but what do you guys think?

Without some pics it's hard to say. Can't you drill some holes in the heatsink, lined up with the holes in the Radeon and use nuts and bolts and washers to hold it in place.

nope it just misses being large enough to match up any kind of holes. I put 2 pegs through and adhesed them to the side of the heatsink.......Maybe that will hold untill I can think of a better way. Been running almost non-stop for a week now and no glitches ....seems to be cooling the Hell out of it too The heatsink BARELY even warms up at the fin level!!

Lots of people have rigged various clamps for waterblocks, and maybe you could use some modified version. You can get brass stock at the hobby store and try to rig something. Most heatsink setups use positive pressure with some sort of spring device to maintain good contact. What would really be nice would be if ATI and nVidia used standard mounts from previous generation CPU coolers. If it just took an old pentium-style mount, we could reuse all the old CPU overclocking stuff for the GPU. Same with Northbridge chips.
