Here's a page from ATI that says that only four of the pins on the 7-pin are used for video.

I wonder why it has 7 pins then?

Found this too...

What if my PC graphics card has a 7-pin S-video connector instead of 4-pin ?
The four pin S-video connector as shown above is the standard connector for carrying S-video. Those seven pin connectors seen on some PC graphics cards are non-standard connectors for carrying S-video. The use of the pins on those seven pin connectors is not standardized and can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. (For some strange reasons some manufacturers in PC industry just keep constanly breaking the industry standars and create lots of confuzion to users when doing so).

Generally the four pins on those 7-pin connectors on the same places as the standard four pin S-video connector have practcly always the same fuctionality as those pins in S-video connector. The other three pins can have then some extra signals which are not part of S-video (usually some pins of those carry composite video and some control signals, but the use of those three extra pins vary quite much). So if you encounter 7 pin connector for S-video, then forget the three center pins... just use the four on the standard positions. The circuit shoudl work with those connectors as well.

ibarnett,

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't found the option to chose formats.

Again, my TV is a Sony 27" Trinitron. Does anybody know if it's possible to change formats on this model? I've looked thru my TV's menu and have had zero luck in finding where I would select a format, (PAL, NTSC, etc.) - I've been know to find things right under my nose.

In any case/format the video card should have it covered with it's ability to output various formats, which I've tried. Also, with my handycam I'm able to pipe in signal without any issues(this I know is NTSC). My TV displays the video quite well.

packetloss,
Thanks for your input. Great link and info on the difference between 4 and 7 wire s-video. It's good to know that the industry standard has at least agreed to keep the 4 pins consisent.

It turns out I'm Mr. Mom today. Home with jr., so I've not made it to the store to pick up an s-video-to-s-video cable yet!!

Its usually not possible to change your tv's input type (PAL/NSTC) a tv set bought in us/can will always be NTSC, and vice versa. There wont be a choice for NTSC/PAL, well at least 99.99% of the time. If it was a PAL/NTSC issue then it would be much more garbled than just plain b/w. Ive seen PAL on NTSC SVIDEO (i own a PAL Sony TRV900E miniDV cam) and its not pretty.

Maybe your SVIDEO to COMPOSITE adapter is faulty (broken wire etc).

Yeah, type change, I didn't think you could, at least not on my model.
As for the adapter? That's one item I have not positively nailed down. Also, The card is older, but I've never used the s-video out on it before, so I don't even know if it's functioning properly. Just because I see a nice B&W pic dosen't really mean it's functionining properly..??
I will learn more when I'm finally able to try out an s-vid-to-s-vid cable; I still haven't picked one up yet.
