Helpful dinosaurs who remember AGP needed...

I am trying to keep my sons computer going to save myself some money (especially as I have four children!) I have completely rebuilt the system and can run Prime95 for ten hours absolutely stable. However if I try to run 3dMark05/06 I get the BSD but 3dMark 2001SE runs without problem. The rig will also randomly lock up with games such as RCT3.

I have set out below a detailed spec of the machine and would be very grateful if anyone with a good memory of AGP rigs with P4 processors has any suggestions. Everything running at stock speeds, four fans (3 intake one exhaust). All drivers are the latest I can find.

P4 3.0
Asus P4V800D-X
1GB Corsair (2x512MBG XMS4000 3,4,4,8)
X1950 Pro AGP
Main Board temp 37C (Sisoft Sandra)
Processor temp 48C (Sisoft Sandra)
Power/Aux temp 84C (Sisoft Sandra)
GPU 65C
I know this last reading is very high but do not know what it relates to.

Case door OFF, a fan on AGP. More memory wouldn't hurt. See if more air on AGP helps.

Well, I don't believe 65c on the GPU would be too high on today's cards. Don't know about the X1950 AGP card though. Hope someone with personal experience with that card can chime in.

Re: Helpful dinosaurs who remember AGP needed...

I have an AMD rig with an AGP x1950 card.

My kid is playing spore right now with the card at 78. He hasn't had any issues.

How old is the case? I had an older case with all kinds of fans, but the was not enough clearance for air to get below the AGP card. I bought the cheap Rosewill case at newegg and all problems went away.

By problems, I mean anywhere from artifacts to complete lockups.

Re: Helpful dinosaurs who remember AGP needed...

Maybe the Power/Aux temp is the graphiccard itself (the memory, not the gpu).

I'd suggest to let it run with open case for some time, if the situation improves you should look for another case, or other ways to improve ventilation.

Also, as Sir Skully already suggested, a little bit extra RAM wouldn't hurt.

Greetings

Dru

Re: Helpful dinosaurs who remember AGP needed...

You say you are using the latest drivers. Does this include the video drivers?
If so I'd try a older driver and see what happens. What PSU are you using in this rig? A PSU could cause problems only in 3D mode if its undersized or starting to go south.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. To answer the specific question - yes it is the latest ATI drivers (tried both with and without the catalyst overhead). The O/S is XP pro SP3 and all system and device drivers are up to date including the BIOS which I flashed up to the last version for this mobo. I am slightly wary of the Via chipset as I have always used Intel chipsets. There is a nagging doubt at the back of my mind of how up to date the drivers for the AGP port in particular are and I have not found any method of updating them despite spending a few hours on the Via website.
The PSU is a Tagan Super-rock rated at 500W so it should be up to the job.
I will use some older drivers and run with the side off to see what happens.

PS I found out last night that 3DMark 2001 and 3DMark 2003 run perfectly but 3DMark 2005/6 both cause get the BSD - how weird is that?

I think you are absolutely right. When I went onto the ATI site today they have moved drivers for older cards, including the X1950 pro, into a "legacy driver support structure." Last week when I downloaded drivers there was no such message and I had installed the latest drivers - v9.5. That could well be the root of all of the problems.
However I must confess I got completely fed up with the whole issue and had the feeling that I could end up spending a shed load of money trying to solve a problem on old technology. That - and the fact I really do not like the Via chipset convinced me it was time to upgrade so my son will soon be taking ownership of the first quad core processor in the house (Q8400) coupled to a GA-EP45 and an HD4870 with 4GB Kingston DDR2 - he (and me) can't wait!
