Re: need a 3870

yea, just one card.
My OC isn't stable though
The benchmark runs without a hitch, but as soon as I play... crash.
its a new build, and I'm not sure of all these new BIOS features for OCing...
not as easy as the old P4 system

had to reduce the clock to 9x300, seems stable here. (prime95 for the last 45 mins)

Re: need a 3870

Well, as some may know I've been having issues with a new build.
Finially narrowed it down to this card.
Either stock settings, or OC'd, my new build is locking up/rebooting while playing 3D.
I've finally desided to down clock this card and have been able to play some games.
Set the clocks to 750 core, and 950 mem, and I've finished the crysis demo for the first time.

I've asked for an RMA replacement, cuz I do believe this card has great potential.
With rivatuner controlling the fan that is... lol.

750 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's lower than stock speed of 775 !!!

I hope the new replacement card runs properly. Any other owners having problems like this with this card?

Re: need a 3870

So I got my replacement card...
It actually runs at speed this time!!

Although, this one is overheating.
I'm 99% sure it got jarred during shipping, and removing the heatsink and reaplying new thermal compound would salve the overheating, it'll void the warranty

What would you recommend I do? Void the warranty and more then likely fix the overheating;
or would you RMA the card? and hope the (third) one works...

P.S. If I up the fan speed 100% I can run games at 850/1190 speeds without crashing.

The fan is supposed to be automaticly heat controlled. It should automatically be at the top speed setting when needed. I'd call tech support if your second card heat sensor isn't working right.

Re: need a 3870

I got a BIOS update from HIs,

I flashed the card, I also removed the heatsink and replaced the thermal compound. Used MX-2

My idle temps are now at 40c idle vise 60c idle before flash and MX-2.
Highest load temp I've seen is 53c (vise 70c +) as monitored through rivatuner's hardwar monitor.(playing fear/crysis)
I no longer have to manually adjust the fan, it works properly now!!! WOOT!

So HUGE improvement through the flash and compound replacement!!!

BUT! (isn't there always one of them?!)

I still get VPU errors?!?!
Although they are ALOT fewer and farther between...
Can this be a driver issue, and not hardware?
Never hard these problems with my 800xl tho...

Thoughts?

I read somewhere (an ATI Radeon tweak site) to just turn off the error correction in the driver and just play.

Re: need a 3870

Are you still having issues with your HIS card? I returned mine do to my system becoming so unstable and vpu errors. NewEggs reviews also show this card to be a bit unstable. Many complaints on the website. I called newegg and asked them to please let me order a new card. They refunded my money so I ordered the diamond which is scheduled to come in tomorrow. Hope yours is working well.

Thumbs up Re: need a 3870

As a matter of fact, I have got mine working great!!
(just last night) I discovered that in game anti aliasing was causing the crashing.
Most games were fine, Guild Wars was the #1 culprit for crashing with in game AA. (crashed within 10-15 seconds of play)
I've disabled all in game AA, and enable it through CCC. Problems(so far) fixed!

Re: need a 3870

Great news, glad you are all set. I hate to see anyone get burned after spending lots of money.
