socket 775 and the chipset 925 will be around for a while according to Intel. Good news for those of us that are looking into purchasing/building this style of system.

If it's gonna be around for awhile, why rush into it before its matured?

You believe what intel says?
Like
"RD-Ram is superior in every way" and switching back to DDR.
"True GHz are better" & "Netburst is the superior architecture" and then releasing the Pentium-M.
"More true GHz = more power" and then changing all their model names to three digit codes because just GHz can't describe the real power of a CPU...
"There is no need for 64bit in desktop computers" and releasing CPUs with EMT64...
etc.
I don't think that they will replace Socket 775 soon but the alias "Socket-T" is already out of date because the chip called "Tejas" that is responsible for the "T" will never be produced.

It will be available on a few boards, but far from all. That's true. It's a technically possible solution, though.

Yes, I agree that it's been a very nice discussion. It's been quite some time since we had one, so I enjoyed it very much.

Also, never underestimate the power of Intel's spin doctors. At many times I think the tech people sit there wondering "why they hell are they saying all this stuff".

At the time they said that it WAS superior to DDR. The biggest problem was the folks that make rambus memory were a pain in the *** to negotiate with and made it difficult for ALL manufacturers, not just Intel.

The Pentium-M was designed for laptops. At the time the current Pentiums were too hot and big for laptops so they had a group of engineers go back and design a portable processor. They did such a good job that now Intel is moving that way as a company.

Kind of linked to the Pentium-M thing. Intel is realizing that they can't increase the clock that much faster because of heat so to stay competative they start focusing on features instead of clock speed. Nothing misleading here.

There currently isn't a need for 64bit in desktop computers. Will there be in the future? Sure, but not for a few more years still and even then it will be an extremely small market.

Technology changes, its a fact of life. To not acknowledge that something just bought as state of the art isn't already out dated as soon as its plugged in is pretty dumb.
