Re: Radeon HD 4870-1gig GDDR5

I installed my new DangerDen full cover water block yesterday. And WOW 32-33C after running rthdribl..just unreal the difference in temp. On air the Radeon HD 4870 was 80C a 47-48C difference. Before I couldn't touch the card, now its just warm. DangerDen makes a great full cover water block..

Yeah. Liquid cooling will surely do that. You're making me envious Skully.

My 3870X2 card hits 63C under full load. 49C at idle. But I have a dedicated twin cooling fan card (Vantec Spectrum) I added right under my video card which blows directly onto the video card Even though the fan's description says it mounts in a PCI slot, I have mounted it in any slot I want.

From Vantec: "With the speed at which computer components now run, there is a tremendous amount of heat generated inside a PC. While case fans help cool the system, they generally only provide horizontal airflow. With that in mind, Vantec introduces the Spectrum Fan Card. Utilizing any available PCI slot, the Spectrum Fan Card serves a dual purpose of directly cooling any PCI/AGP cards surrounding it as well as providing better air circulation with two adjustable fans. Made from UV sensitive material and featuring built-in UV LED lights, the Vantec Spectrum Fan Card lights up your case while cooling it down."

I hope to get around to liquid cool my current rig. It would probably bring down the temps another 20C. But right now I'm enjoying using it! (Fallout 3 right now)

Re: Radeon HD 4870-1gig GDDR5

Hey trav, nice dual fan cooling card. That should help a
lot. My temps while surfing are CPU 22c, system 28c, 4870 1gig 26c. Ambient room temp 18c. I throw everything at the 4870 and the warmest I've seem so far is 36c.
By the by my E8400 runs nice @ 4gig, 8X5OO.

Re: Radeon HD 4870-1gig GDDR5

i just got the asus darkknight version of the 4870, black heat pipes and all....darned scary looking. i'll let you know what i can squeeze out of it, once i get this whole new rig up and together. never tried a water block. but, man, i just put a 3850 in my ol' p4p800-e, replacing a 6800GS, and the difference is so dramatic -- i can see things i never saw before.

Re: Radeon HD 4870-1gig GDDR5

Be careful of the PowerColor 4870 1 gig cards....

they come from the factory overclocked to 850/925....

but especially with the Cat 8.12s-----very few will run at that setting....

Crank them down to 790/910----and they are fine....

You get what you pay for.......

I paid less----I got less....

Nice raging bull! Nice!

I know what you mean about the vid card upgrade thing. Especially with putting in something like a 3850. The 4870 on your new box ... just wait 'til you see Crysis run there!
