Random Shutdowns while in 3D Apps

Hey everyone,

my friend has been experiencing random shutdowns while he was running 3D progs (AutoCAD, GTA 3, other Direct3D games, ...) His computer will just turn off after a few mins within the programs.

Here is his setup:

XP 2000+
Asus A7V333 mobo (with latest VIA driver package)
512 Mb PC2100 DDR
ATI 9700 Radeon (with latest Drivers)
DirectX 9 (although not 100% sure)
400W PSU
Win98 SE

• I don't think it's a temperature problem cause his PC was working fine before. I don't think it's a PSU problem, because like I said it was working fine before.

• I was thinking that it's due to some graphic problem since it only happens in 3D apps. Maybe the drivers, because he seems to have gotten this problem more and more since upgrading the Catalyst Drivers.

• I told him to upgrade to WinXP Pro (which he can get for VERY cheap from the University)

Do you guys have any ideas?

you mean a full re-install of win98SE + drivers and what-not?

if I do the reinstall, should I install in this order:

Format
Win98 SE
AGP 4-in-1
Directx, which version (8.1 or 9)?
Which version of Catalyst (2.5, 3.0 or 3.1) ?
ATI control panel?

otherwise I'll wait for him to get his copy of WinXP Pro and do the same install steps.

Luckily he has an external HD as well so the format shouldn't be a problem.

That's the order, I'd get all the upgrades for Win98 right after the 4in1's. Maybe I was mistaken in reading your post.
I thought that he had done an upgrade over an exsisting Windows. Yeah, if he can get the XP from school, now's the time to do it. He won't be sorry, just get all the XP drivers for his cards and periph's first.

No, his pc has been running Win98SE ever since we built it (about 3 months ago)

Before the new drivers I guess, we haven't added any more hardware.

SupDawg: that's a good idea, I'll do that to see if the cpu can hadnle it.

The old drivers were removed correctly ?? Antivirus turned off during install ?? Look for patches for those troublesome progs. Maybe you should revert to the older ATI drivers and see if they still work.

jsut to note a fresh format with XP install would be best choice of OS for some one thats not heavy into trouble shooting and parts, drivers, etc, as he must not be, sense your helping him with the problems (xp solved all my networking problems, USB device problems among lots of stuff)

Bonjour Frenchy. I would suggest the following install order:

Format
Win98 SE
AGP 4-in-1
Catalyst 3.1
ATI control panel and turn FastWrites off - Reboot
DirectX9

This has worked very well for me.

Well, the pc's been getting worse. The pc will just shutdown after anything from 30 secs to 1 min after loading...So now I'm formating his HDD and going to reinstall everything.

the setup again is A7V333 with XP 2000+ and ATI Radeon 9700

So this is what I'm gonna do:

- Format
- Win98SE
- AGP 4-in-1 (latest version is 4.46...any special recommendations??)
- Catalyst (which one? 3.0 or 3.1?)
- ATI control Panel
- DirectX (9.0? or 8.1?)

I don't know if I should put Cat. 3.0 with directX 8.1, or Cat. 3.1 with DX 9, or Cat. 3.0 with DX 9, etc...

PLEASE give me some advice as to what Catalyst/DirectX combo to use...

Thanks

P.S. I'm not trying to rush anyone but this is URGENT.

The latest version is sometimes best. Try Cat 3.1 and DX9. I'm running those with no problems.
