I am not happy with my Power Management. This computer is not going from 12x to 20x fast enough. I have been going in and disabling when I am using heavy. I have been enabling C-State, CIE and SpeedStep all at one time.

I am going to test with C1E only and SpeedStep only. I don't think any of the Asus utilities will let me turn it off when I am set to Manual. The Windows power plan will not turn it off.

I have tested the Power Management in every combination. I don't have faith that if it is in the bios that it works. I noticed that with SpeedStep disabled I no longer have Processor Power Management listed in the Vista Power Plan. But other than that, I don't see any difference from C1E.

C1E enhanced halt state — C1 halt state is invoked when the operating system's idle process issues a HLT command. Entering halt state, which is a lower-power state, will cut a CPU's power consumption and heat production. C1E halt state is also invoked by the HLT command, but it turns down the entire CPU's clock frequency (via multiplier control) and voltage.


Enhanced SpeedStep — SpeedStep modulates the CPU clock speed and voltage according to load. The operating system must be aware of SpeedStep, as must the system BIOS, and then the OS can request frequency changes via ACPI. SpeedStep is more granular than C1E halt, because it offers multiple rungs up and down the ladder between the maximum and minimum CPU multiplier and voltage levels.



C1E - Enhanced Halt State
"Whenever the OS executes the halt instruction, the CPU enters what is known as the halt state. Architecturally, what's going on in a halt state is the clock signal is shut off to the CPU for some period of time. With no clock signal, none of the logic in the chip will do anything and thus power consumption is reduced. Performance is also significantly reduced; however, the halt instruction isn't usually called during application usage, so the performance aspects of the halt state aren't very important.

The problem with the halt state is that it does nothing to reduce voltage, only current draw by stopping clocks from going to the CPU. Since Power varies linearly with both current and voltage (P = I * V), you're effectively only addressing half of the problem. The Enhanced Halt State, as Intel calls it, does two things: it reduces the clock speed of the CPU by decreasing the clock multiplier down to its minimum value (on the EE 965 series, that's 14x, or 2.8GHz), then reducing the voltage. The clock speed is reduced and then the voltage is dropped, to maintain stability.


EIST:
It is demand based reduction in CPU clock speed and voltage. Using the same mechanism of adjusting clock speed and voltage, based on the application demand, the processor will dynamically increase/decrease its clock speed between its minimum clock and its normal operating frequency, as well as voltage, in order to optimize for power consumption. Because of the way EIST works, there's inherently a drop in performance. The idea is this: if you're performing a task that's not using 100% of the CPU, the CPU will operate at a slightly reduced frequency in order to conserve power. So, while some tasks will require that the system run at full speed, others will run at lower speeds.

I don't know that if C-State is enabled there is ant difference. In every combination, the only thing I found is that with SpeedStep Enabled and C1E Disabled, I move from 12x to 20x faster. And, that is what I wanted.

Till I get a wattt/ amp meter, I am going to assume that the C-State does not work at all, the C1E and SpeedStep do the same thing except SpeedStep alone is more responsive.

In an older post I wrote that I was told that the MSI x58 still does not have a good bios. Not true if you believe the new x58 review on Tom's Hardware.

New Bios, 1303. Prime95 stable for me
See no benefit, nor any problems. Added no new devices.

new CPU, must be the new stepping.

I googled a bit and folks at XS claim it allows you to set your Multi on a 920 to 21x-----which is actually the turbo speed.......

That would be nice for lesser RAM that can't handle a high Bclck/Ram Multi

But I actually run a lower multi and higher Bclck....

Might be some other benefits-----let me think on it a bit......

21 does not change my Mem clock, I am still at 1440 MHz? I wish it did, because the next step for me is over much over 1600. I think the memory will do more.

2.5V blue screened at 3.78. Now I am testing at 1.3V, So far so K.

Little problem, at 100% load I am up to 76C. What temp do you think is the fail point? Vcore still within specs though.

21x was fun. SpeedStep was no longer, but C1E was still available. I was getting an idle of 35C. But, I went back to 20x. The increase in benchmarks were not that great.
