ASUS Rampage II Extreme (x58/ ICH10R)

Well, after some waiting, I've put together my new system :
Core i7-920, ASUS Rampage II Extreme, 6Gb DDR3-1333 Kingmax (3x2Gb), the other components are from my old build.

The system performs very well, but there are few issues with the mentioned motherboard

The system won't boot if the yellow RAM slots are populated. Whatever I do, the ROG LCD says "Locked" and than happens nothing, while if the blue slots are populated the system works flawlesly.

I've read about the Locked problem, but there is no "normal" solution, I've updated the BIOS, tried with one memory module, two memory modules, but no luck, if there is any memory module is in any of yellow slots, the system simply won't boot

It crossed my mind that a module could be damaged, but the memory does the MemTest without any errors. Or it could be the board, but I don't have any space Core i7 system parts for a test, so some advice would be good

Other than that I'am really happy with my new setup

The board overclocks nicely, but at the moment I'am stuck with the stock Intel cooler ( the retention mechanism for the Noctua NH-U12 is somewhere in mail ).

With stock cooler the CPU goes up to 3.5 put freezes up my system randomly, at 3.33 I'ts stable, but the temps are too high ( 60-70C)

Hey RaVeN !!!

Congrats on the new build.

You're just going to have to wait it out. All the X58 motherboards from all the manufacturers are getting nothing but complaints. As usual early adapters will have to go through the "fix up" stage usually in the form of BIOS upgrades. Let's hope that will happen soon. Still, it seems that the X58 boards were released to market way before they were ready for real use.

Your temps do sound high, way high. My vid card hits 62C when under full load and I'd like to bring that down. You will need better cooling. I thought X58 systems were supposed to be naturally cooler than X48 systems.

Re: ASUS Rampage II Extreme (x58/ ICH10R)

wizkid, I've tried everything, even got the CMOS battery out, but no luck

traveler & Sir Skully, thanks

Well I know the temps are too high comparing them with my old system ( Rampage Formula & Q9550 @ 3.4 ), I'll see about that when I recive the mount mechanism for my Noctua or I'll get a AVC Black Samurai cooler, but at the moment, I'll have to do with the stock cooler since there won't be any 1366 coolers for at least two more weeks in shops in Croatia.

Also I really hope that ASUS will sort this mess with the ram slots out, or I'll have to RMA the board, and to be honest I don't want to take my rig apart, at least not before new year

Re: ASUS Rampage II Extreme (x58/ ICH10R)

The blue slots must be populated first or else it will not boot. This is by design, there is nothing wrong with your board.
